I was wondering if anyone knows all the possibilities why the battery light would come on.

Well my battery light is on steady now. At first it would come on during a drive stay on for a while then go out. Also at times it would flicker on and off. Now it just stays on. Wondering if you could give me ideas on how to figure out what is going.

I did put in a new alt. a week ago and the batteries are 2 years old.

Have you checked your battery voltage both while engine is off and also when engine is running?

Have you checked your cable connections, especially at the new alternator?

Did the light used to come on before you changed out your alternator?

Yes Both batteries are at 12.3 or so when engine is off and 14.5 or so when engine is on.

Connections are good--not lose or corroded.

Yes the lights came on before alt. was replaced. I did pull alt and brought it in to have tested--they said it tested good.

Any answers to what the question: How the battery light is triggered or what can trigger it? I was wondering if there is a checklist of 'codes' that one can go over when the light is on.

Does anyone know what can trigger the battery light to come on?
Sometimes a bad plug connection at the alternator can do it but you pulled those and re-plugged them in and your charging voltage is good.

Your battery voltage with engine off is maybe a little low. Did you check it after sitting overnight or right after you were out driving? Maybe throw a charger on the batteries and see what the resting voltage is after leaving a charger on overnight.

Bad grounds can do it.

Bad battery cable? That is one that is often overlooked since the corrosion is under the insulation and not visible. Best thing to do there is test for voltage drop on both ends.

I charged up the batteries real good and then I put some vasoline at the connector on the alt.

Drove it around and the light was still on for a while then it went off and it has been off for the last 3 days.

Maybe problem solved for now.

Thanks.

Just had this same issue, my problem was the alternator. the battery light would come on. I replaced the alternator under warranty with a remanufactured in the USA alternator from Pep Boys. Still kept having the issue. Got a different alternator from Oreillys and the problem stopped. I had Oreillys test the Pep Boys alternator off the truck and it tested good. On the truck, that same alternator tested low output. By the way the Oreillys alternator was remanufactured in China.

Check your belt tensioner, and pulleys. Also its possible that your belt may have stretched.
