Hi everyone. My friend asked me about the best rpm for fuel economy with his 6.0 when towing. I know my 7.3 needs to be kept below 2000. But for a 6.0 i don't have a clue? His diff is 3.73 and it's an auto tranny. Any ideas? Thanks.

Mine rpm is 1650 at 65mph. My tires changes this for lower rpm. Great mpg with this set up. 3.73

What size tires do you have and what kind of mileage are you getting?
I've found that the best mileage is when the RPM are kept between 1800 and 2000. Any less the 1800 RPM and your going slower then the speed limit. Over 2000 rpm and your hitting the afterburners.
Tires 325 = 35.5 MPG 17-18 freeway empty-2k. 13-14 towing 7-10k loades on freeway. tow/haul if needed for starts and help in stops.
I make 4-6 hr hauls for work. I have enough power with the tires. I ordered 17" and change to 20" knowing gear ratio would be great for open road. Maybe 3.35 ratio with tires. Its like factory 20's with
34.2" tires. I didn't adjust the computer for bigger tires.
It pulls fine for what I do. I just don't pull 15k like some up 8% grade wide open. Drive with a light foot ( like a old man of 50 ) which I am.
Unloaded, mine gets its best mileage about 1700 RPMs. Mine has 3.73s, but I don't think the ratio would change the optimum operating range. I do think that with a load, it might like a little higher RPM. Just an opinion.
Where do you folks drive to get those low engine speeds & high MPG's? Parking lots?? There's no way I can keep mine below 2000 RPM's on Highways and Interstates unless I want to get passed by the tractors mowing the medians! Even with 285's and 3.73 gears I'm turning 2250 RPM @ 68-70 MPH and 2400 @ 78-80 MPH. Avg. MPG is 15.5-16.5 empty and no head wind!
Hey Boating8...I usually (right conditions) stay at 2K rpm or tad under. My TT is litewt., but about maxed out on GVWR. Dosen't bother me (solo/towing) to get passed. Alot of speeding & towing ego trips OTR nowadays. JMO!
Have dropped the hammer on a few, but not at 2K rpm. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif
I wonder the same. I can't get over 9 pulling a 10K TT downhill with a tail wind. Maybe it's the difference between Long Beds/Short Beds Crew/Super Cab, and 4x4 vs 4x2. I just find it hard to believe some that post 12 MPG pulling a 12K trailer with a CC 4x4 LB. I'm lucky to get that unloaded around town.
I think I bit the big one with my tires. Or I have a big problem. I average 10-11 around town (8-9 on a heavy foot day) and 12-13 highway. Went up a little with the straight exhaust.
