I am getting ready to take a couple of long trips and I need to get a good CB that I can use the tow rig. I would prefer a hand held unit if I can find one that will work well.
I have a 2005 F350 lariat.
I would like to be able to find out about traffic porblems, talk with others in our group while on the road.

I got a Midland 75-822. Tucks away in the center console and can easily be removed when not needed in the truck. Also came with a battery pack a detachable antenna so it's totally portable. You'll need to get an external antenna for the open road.

What antenna did you use and where did you mount it?

Thanks,

Get a K-30 or a Lil Will magnet mount antenna for a quick setup (there are better, more expensive one's out there, but these are good). Make sure you set the swr's before trying to transmit, or you will fry the radio. Once the swr's are good, you can remove and replace the antenna as needed. Just put the antenna back in the same location each time, as a change will also change the swr's. Best place is center of the roof.

As for a radio Uniden Pro 510's or 520's are great little radio's and can be had for $49.00 and $59.00 respectivly. Loud little talkers. As for a mount, just shove it between the seat and console, you may need an external speaker though. Midland makes a nice handheld, but I've never had good performance from any handhelds except my Cherokee AH-100, modded to 400 channels and it has single sideband too.

Feel free to ask away if you have any other CB Radio questions, I can help you out as far as info, or where to get stuff, mild to wild, it's only money.

I have that Cobra in my truck with a Wilson 1000 roof mount antenna and a remote speaker mounted above my seatbelt. It works great.

Do you have any idea what the range is with the handheld CB like the cobra?

Thanks,

Cobra "Road Trip". Just bought one at Camping World on sale for $75. Comes with magnetic mount antenna as well as the rubber one, runs on batteries or the included cig lighter adapter.

Mine talks pretty good. I have gotten out to about ten miles or so. The CB shop I bought it from "peaked and tuned" it. I dont remember now what that means,, but for a few bucks it sounded OK. I by no means am a CB expert. One thing I did learn while researching though was,,, get a good antenna. A cheap CB with a good antenna is better than a good CB with a cheap antenna. I put in a Wilson 1000 roof mount. I took a deep breath and drilled a hole in my roof and everything turned out OK. It takes all of 5 seconds to unscrew the antenna from the mount,,leaving a small cap on the roof. For me, this is a great CB/antenna. Oh, and the remote speaker above my left ear works very well. It lets me turn it to a volume setting where I can hear it without filling up the cab with CB noise. The remote speaker was pretty cheap and very easy to install,, there's a jack on the CB just for it.
