I'm going to mount a tranny cooler on my 6.0. I have a pretty good idea where I can put it, but I'm open to any ideas or different spots to mount it. Any feed back would be great! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

A secondary cooler? These trucks have a very large tranny cooler to begin with. Follow the lines to the cooler and have a look-see.

Yeah, Why?

Like Ryan said, this thing has a honkin big tranny coller on it already. One the good things about the torqueshift.

Yeah.....maybe I do have lots of money to burn! That's why I wipe with $20 dollar bills! hehehe /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif J/K
I have seen the stock one, it is big. But I live in Phx, Arizona. It's hot here. I also tow a big trailer. I don't like seeing my trans temp at 190 degrees. I would like to see it around 175. That's why I was askin.

Everyone always knows whats best for YOUR truck, lol. I read the first 3 posts last night but thought I would wait for your response. I figured it had something to do with living in hel...ur I mean AZ.

I don't know specific temps/capacities but you could look at the aftermarket trans pans with fins. IIRC, you get more fluid capacity and greater heat dispersion kinda like a heat sink. Generally, the trans temp seems to run about 90F above ambient temp with OE cooler so your temps look about right.

Make sure you take/post pics and results if you get the other cooler mounted. Is it going to replace the OE cooler or act as an additional cooler?

I was thinking of making it a secondary cooler. Maybe even putting a bypass on it, w/ valve, for cold weather. I'm not sure yet. I just wanna pro-long the life of my tranny. It's freakin HOT here!

I would try to mount another one to the same mounting holes as the original except in front of the condenser. I haven't done this but it looks like you could use some spacers and longer bolts and mount the second cooler right on top of the brackets of the OE cooler.

Of course I'm also one of those that thinks the only benefit will be for yourself. I don't think your truck will know. Your transmission has a thermostat in it.

Last time I checked it only gets to be 95 degrees, in July, in Tulsa, Oklahoma... In Phoenix, Arizona It gets between 115-125 degrees. Extreme heat requires extreme measures! I wanna keep my trans temp around 175 if possible. With no Trailer I'm somewhere between 185-195 degrees, so your telling me my truck won't know that it's on there??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Yep, that's what I'm telling you. I'll also add that it won't care if it's in Phoenix or Tulsa. If you guys would spend as much time learning how these things work as you do trying to figure how to re-engineer them, you might learn that some of this re-engineering is of no value. It has a thermostat in it.

All that gets ya is more hot fluid.

Use a quality trans fluid and don't worry about it.

I will add, 190 is right smack dab in the middle of the tranny's optimum temperature range. I'd be happy as a lark to have the tranny running 190 in an extremely hot climate while towing.

Well, if it helps to get another answer, A friend of mine had his mounted on the frame rail. It is a cooler with its own fan and temperature switch. When he gets up to temp pulling his fifth wheel, he can hear the large fan kick in with a whirl. It sits up far enough to be protected from what ever might be kicked up on the ground.

Huh? I've lived in the Phoenix area for 20yrs and have never seen 125 degrees.

The record high in Phoenix was set--

122 on June 26, 1990;

121 on July 28, 1995;

120 on June 25, 1990;

118 on July 16, 1925,

June
**Average high temperature: 103**
Average low temperature: 72
Warmest ever: 122
Coldest ever: 50
Average precipitation: .1

July
**Average high temperature: 105**
Average low temperature: 80
Warmest ever: 121
Coldest ever: 61
Average precipitation: .8

August
**Average high temperature: 103**
Average low temperature: 79
Warmest ever: 116
Coldest ever: 60
Average precipitation: 1.0

It does get hot here,no doubt about it, however this guy makes it sound like Phoenix is 115-125 on a regular basis. The above dates are RECORDS, extreme heat not the norm. I work out of my trucks, which all pull trailers on a daily basis with all but one with under 100,000mi. Maintain your truck well, change fluids, respect your truck and don't drive like an idiot while towing and you will be fine. I do have larger coolers on my 01 Ford and Dodge but the 6.0 Excursion has never ever had a heat problem even on the hottest of days.

Like my tranny guy @ Dennys trans. says it`s nothing to see trans temps as high as 250 degrees here in the Az. desert
Your @ 190, chill out, but you won`t.

From the service manual regarding checking the transmission fluid flow through the transmission cooler; this seems to indicate that maximum flow occurs at 180°F so if one were so inclined I would think they could cool it cooler than 190°F or at least down to 180°F.

Frankly, I think the OEM engineered system is great but some may have different needs.

Bob

"Temperature Flow
44°C (112°F) 236.6 ml (8 oz) 15 sec
78°C (172°F) 473.2 ml (16 oz) 15 sec
82°C (180°F) and up 1893 ml (64 oz) 15 sec

There is a temperature valve in the pump. Cooler flow rates will vary according to ATF temperature. The use of a diagnostic tool will determine the actual fluid temperature. If adequate flow is observed into the container, the test is now complete."

So what if maximum flow is achieved at 180F? There is absolutely, positively nothing wrong at 190F. What have you achieved if you spend money on making the reliability of the vehicle less because you are more prone to fluid leaks from the additional line and cooler just for a measly irrelavant 10F?
