I was looking around, saw one on sale for less than 150. saw one for regular price for around 200, one for 275. They all seem to have similar tunes capabilities for similar power. What's the best tuner?
'99 F350 7.3L manual trans.
I saw that you can get up to 140+ hp with a switch which sounds great but is it too good to be true? I'm new to this engine so I'm not sure of its capabilities.
Also I have some blue smoke on hard accel so maybe I should try to figure that out before I tune?

Thank you all in advance.

Best? Get a hydra. Everything else is outdated/being phased out.

Why does it matter if the product is getting phased out of the products are pretty much install and nothing more? Is there any benefit to issuing hydra over anything?

The tuners can give you some nice power upgrade. To get all 140 hp I would think you may need a lot of extra support (turbo, exhaust, ect) and that is 140 would be at redline. A 80 HP tune is a lot of fun with a six speed.

The truck came with a custom MBRP cat back exhaust it looks like it that helps. I'll have to look at the hydra one. I like the simplicity of just turning a knob on presets than downloading tunes and running but if it makes more sense to get hydra I'll look more into it.

Because if they're being phased out, there's no support for them when you have issues with it.
If you ever want custom tunes, you would have to send it in to be tuned. With the hydra you just hook it to your laptop and download the tunes.

I just got a hydra switch. I have a dp tuner and diablosport Turner I'll be selling in the near future. I'd sell the diablosport for 100+ shipping.

The hydra chip is what you want. Plain and simple. It has the advantage in all categories of chips over all the other kinds. It is settled science at this point, but a lot of folks are unwilling to accept it. It holds more positions, can run tunes from multiple tuners at the same time, built in no start, built in bypass (runs what is flashed on pcm), leave chip in when getting new tunes or rearranging order or deleting some, still has full support from all the tuners, and is what is certainly most recommended by anyone that is up to date on 7.3s.

In short, buy the hydra and don't look back.

It wasn't incredibly difficult. If you can easily access the bolt in the engine bay for the harness into the computer it'll be easy and quick. But if not it'll make it difficult. Also, I didn't scrape the silicone off the connection on the PCM enough the first time so I reinstalled it only to find out I didn't do it right to have to repeat the whole process again and it worked the second time.

Does the chip come preprogramed or does it have to be loaded either while installed or before?

I think depends who you get it from. Pretty simple to load tunes onto. I recommend the extension cable. Then you can swap out tunes pretty easily.

You have to be running windows in order to use the HydraFlash software that you use to load tunes to the hydra chip. Any of the people you purchase from can pre-load tunes if you need them to. However, it is very easy to change them yourself. I do it all the time.

Forgive my ignorance but why not load and forget, just because you can doesnt mean you need to, am i right or am i missing something? I like the idea of adjusting pcm for towing, but is something happening in trans ans motor where is needs contant downloads?

I like not having to disassemble the computer every time I want to try a new tune and the Hydra also allows custom tunes without disassembling as well which is convenient. Also holds a lot of different tunes. I like having at least 8 tunes as well. I had the same question as you before.
