So I have my top end off with the normal 6.0 woes. Oil cooler failure and EGR valve problems, which I suspect are a result of some EGR cooler issues as well. But anyway, It led to the usual injector failure. I am going to replace my injectors and as I am this deep into the motor I have this problem. I am thinking of going with bigger injectors. Do I need to upgrade my HPOP? Or can I get some kind of a piggy back pump to help out? Do I need a bigger HPOP at all? Also thinking of going to a water injection kit. The horsepower boost is a plus, but with the increased advertised fuel mileage with going with bigger injectors it may help. I am also considering it for the lowered exhaust gas temps as well......What are your thoughts on the injection kit.

How big are you planning to go? The stock HPOP can easily support injectors up to about 250-275cc.. Beyond that, you may have to look for a higher flowing pump and unless you are going with twin turbos, it really won't be much of a street truck anyway.

first thing u need to do is get that motorcraft gold coolant out of there. flush it and use restore. 2 stroker posted every step to it on a different thread called coolant filters. that is if u do want to keep this truck.then it u dnt want to deal with your egr problems, do an egr delete or get a bulletproof cooler. if u dnt care, u can pull ur egr valve and clean it every 20000 mi with brake cleaner. and you can get the gasket kit for that from napa or i guess IH. a coolan filter wouldnt hurt. when u put new coolant in, i heard to use cat elc, but i really like rotella stuff. i use there oil in my 6.0l, my C-16 cat, my john deere skidder, and my d5m cat.

You should use carb cleaner, not brake cleaner.

Thanks guys. Already got the EGR delete kit ready to install. I am in the process of re-assembly. With the contaminated coolant and engine oil from the oil cooler failure I planned on a full coolant flush. I also happened to see that particular thread on the flush procedure. I think EX-MOUNTY also has a helpful thread on here about the flush procedure.

On a separate note.... What size are my stock injectors? 140?

a stock 6.0 is 135cc ish

Unless your getting lots of support mods stick to stockers or Cass's 155's..which are making 500HP. If I can get you more info-prices let me know.
Yep, stockers are supposed to be 135cc but you don't get 135cc out of them in reality...

I also agree with Cary about the size of injectors.. If you go much bigger than that, you are going to need a bigger turbo, etc.....

If it helps your decision making process any, I have a set of Casserly's 155's in my truck. My EGT's are 725-750 at 70 mph empty on flat ground; towing my 5er (14K pounds) I'm at 850 on flat ground and 1000-1175 up hill, depending on the grade but I have enough power on tap to destroy all four rear tires if I was so inclined.

Didnt you have RCD 155's or am I mistaking? What happened to those? Start to miss?

Did not have RCD, but they are one of the ones I'm considering. Right now it is between Cass and River City Diesel. What have you heard about RCD? Cass is well worth it but a little pricy.

Yes I did have RCD 155's. Had the tip break off on the #2 injector. From what I learned during that process, the problem was a manufacturing defect in the tip (which RCD buys from a third party). Never had any missing, etc.. with the RCD injectors.

I opted to go with Casserly for this set because he uses the factory tips. The factory tips give better atomization than the 30% larger tips on the old injectors.. That leads to nearly stock EGTs, less smoke and better fuel mileage than the old set but I still have the same (or better) power....

also, consider warren diesel injectors. other forums have good luck with them and good price.

175cc $1450.00 + $1000.00 core charge
At that price, they are rebuilding off of old cores. Casserly will not reuse old cores. All of his start with injectors he gets direct from Ford.

i always understood that all 6.0 injectors are remans.

Even from Alliant, which is a supplier for Ford.
You are correct but that is not the whole story... Remans are essentially new injectors in that any damaged/worn parts are replaced. Where this really matters is the spool valves, which is the most common failure point in 6.0 injectors. Remans have new spool valves in them. As of the last I knew (as late as last month) Ford (or their supplier) is the only place that can get new spool valves. Certainly, none of the guys building bigger injectors can get them.

This is the very reason Casserly's injectors are as expensive as they are. He won't reuse old injectors. He starts with fresh remans from Ford, so his have new spool valves.

RCD will go either way. They can modify yours (or some taken as cores from somebody else) at a price comparable to Warren Diesel or they also have the option for you to buy injectors which are built from fresh Ford remans at a price comparable to Casserly.

Warren Diesel themselves are selling stock remans for $2050/set. So for $1450 it is obvious they are either modifying your old injectors or some taken as cores from somebody else. Either way, at that price, you can be sure the bigger injectors you get from them will have old spool valves in them.
