what generally causes diesel engines to smoke only when accelerating. this happens to be a 6.6 duramax with 170K on the clock.

Quick Answer: Unburned diesel fuel including particulates like carbon and soot.

It means someone is not paying attention to how much they are depressing the "Go" Pedal and forcing more fuel than the engine needs. The extra gets pushed out the exhaust.

What year? Up to '03 the injectors are under the valve covers and caused this issue. Did my buddies a few years ago. He got a letter from GM about the issue and then got denied being 150 miles over the limit.

Just did another '03 for growing oil. The return system is another known issue.
