Hey guys

I need some help here. I’ve got an 86 F250 with a 6.9L and a four speed manual. When I got it, it was having problems shifting while stopped. So I crawled under it and removed the clutch fork to check it out. When I got it all back together the clutch peddles it self is dead (wont return).

I got back under it and removed the bleeder screw and pushed the rod that comes out of the slave and fluid came out. While holding the rod in, I replaced the screw and let the rod out. I thought I herd fluid being pulled into the slave. When I removed the screw again and proceeded to push the rod in again, no fluid. I repeated this a few times and gave up.

Amd I doing this right? I’ve about had it with this truck and I haven’t had it a week yet. The cluth, master, and salve are brand new, less than 3,000 miles on them. The engine runs great and is strong, but I’m all ready pissed off at it.

I’ve tried a few other things as well. Putting a hammer under the peddle so it wouldn’t go down all the way and tried to bleed the system this way too. I’m just at a total less wit this truck. I'm off to buy a vacuum pump, maybe that will work.

Help me before I shoot it.

I am a novice so i will tell u what i know until the gurus show up to help u. When u bleed the system u should not have to remove the screw just losen it enough to let fluid out then tighten it up. Did u check the clutch master cylinder to make sure it had brake fluid in it. I grease my pedal mechanisam under the dash when i had a similiar problem. couldn't hurt. did u check that the firewall was not cracked and that there was the repair plates on the firewall where the clutch goes thru.

Thanks for the reply. I didn’t give it much thought when I removed the screw. I was hoping it would have some thing under the screw I could hook a hose up to maybe so when I did bleed it, the fluid could flow into a can or some thing.

Ya, the master has fluid, and its full. I looked at both sides of the firewall, and can’t seem to see any cracks in it. I don’t suppose theres any clutch linkage cable conversion kit for these things is there?

Clutch bleeding can be frustrating and time consuming. Here is what you need to do. First off, next time you want to pull the fork, if you can keep the push rod compressed, you won't have to go through this at all. The best way to keep it compressed is with the factory shipping retainer strap that comes with a new slave cylinder. It's a handy piece of plastic that is meant to live between the push rod and fork when it is not in use. I've bought new cylinders JUST so I could get that piece of plastic. Since your way past that now, here is what you need to do.

Fill the master and keep the lid OFF.
Close the allen screw on the slave (hereafter refered to as ASOS)
1) Have a helper push the clutch pedal in all the way.
2) Open the ASOS and reclose.
3) Pull the pedal back up and repeat step 1.
Repeat as often as necessary. When you finally seem to be getting some where, repeat steps 1 to 3 again.
Change the position of the truck (nose up, or nose down) and repeat 1 to 3. Change the position of the truck (opposite whatever direction it was before - a big hill can help with this). Repeat 1 to 3. When finished. Repeat 1 to 3. Did I mention repeating 1 to 3? When your finished, you will realize this is what people in hell have to do 24X7, and you will crawl out from under your truck a new person, committed to goodness and kindness.

Thanks for the reply Mel. I’ll give it a shot on Friday when I have some extra time to mess with it. I didn’t buy the vacuum pump since it was all most $50, I’ll leave this as a last resort. If I can’t get this thing to bleed by noon Friday, I think I’ll just load it onto a trailer and take it to a friends shop and let him deal with it. Give my RAM a work out in if I need to tow it.

this sounds really stupid but trust me it works!!! put a jack under the driver side and lift the truck up as high as it can go. get someone to help u bleed it just like u would bleed brakes. do this a couple times and that should get it. I know it sounds a little out there but i just had to do 2 of them, couldnt get them to take and someone told me to try it that way and it worked perfectly both times~!!
