The truck guy at the dealer told me that the '08 F350 and F450 have the same size brake rotors and stopping power and the 610 lbs. or so added weight of the F450 would make it a little harder to stop. However the '08 brakes are larger than my 99.5.

Any brake experts out there? I was thinking the 2008 F450 would have heavier duty brakes than a 2008 F350.

Also I'm debating new '08 at a great price. I tow a 13.5k fiver and can't decide between a
F450 with 4.30 rear end
F350 with 3.73 rear end
F350 with 4.10 rear end
Which would tow best with best fuel mileage?

He's an idiot. Find someone else to talk to.

As one example, per the 2008 SuperDuty brochure, the rear rotor on F-350 DRW is 13.39". Rear rotor on F-450 pickup is 15.35" diameter. So that's not exactly the "same size rotors and stopping power".

Other specs such as swept area and pad size also show the F-450 brakes are quite a bit heavier-duty than the brakes on the F-350 DRW.

Which would tow best with best fuel mileage?
Depends on your load. Buy "enuff truck" for your load, but buying too much truck for your load wastes fuel.

If your load always grosses less than 20k pounds GCW, then get the F-350 SRW with 3.73. If your load sometimes grosses up to 23k GCW, then get the F-350 DRW with 4.10. If your load sometimes grosses up 26k GCW, you need the F-350 DRW TowBoss with 4.30. If your load sometimes grosses above 26k GCW, then you need the F-450 with 4.30 rear axle ratio.

If your load will never gross over 26k GCW, then it's silly to buy the F-450. But if your load will ever be more than 26k, then it's silly to buy anything less.

I thought this guy had some super secret brake information. Duh I could've found that if I had looked hard enough.

Bigger brakes is the one of the biggest reasons for wanting a F450 over the F350. I would love the extra stopping power. With the price of fuel my truck is used only for towing my 13.5 k fifth wheel. I just wanted a bigger safety factor that a F450 would give.

I think I really need the 4.10 rear end with my gross weight.

13.5k for the trailer plus 9k for the tow vehicle is 22.5k GCW. The F-350 DRW with 23,000 GCWR and 4.10 Dana 80 rear axle is available for that application, but you won't have any "wiggle room" for your better half to haul back those pretty rocks she saw 1,000 miles from home. I'd get the F-350 DRW with the TowBoss and 4.30 rear end for that load. But If you like the idea of the bigger brakes, then go for the F-450, even though it's overkill for that trailer. And it's not available with 4.10 rear end.

I like the idea of buying more then I need. I've never been disapointed that way, and have been glad I did it in a couple of cases.

The brakes are a high point, they really work. Here is a comparison to my F350:

2002 F350 gross lining area rear 34.72 Total swept area per axle rear 244.81
2002 F350 gross lining area front 49.60 Total swept area per axle front 264.48
2002 F350 rotor dia. Rear 12.83
2002 F350 rotor dia front 13.03

Wow..... Rears bigger than the fronts. Never heard of such a thing.

I'm borderline between a SRW and a DRW, but I've decided that if I go dually I'm getting the 450. I know it's prolly overkill, but it's not much more money for the bigger wheels/tires and brakes.

Then you never heard of a real truck? ;)

For example, the 2006 F-650 with optional air brakes has front brake drums 15" diameter x 4" wide. But the rear drums are 16.5"x7".

Because the max weight on the front axle is 8,500 pounds, but the max weight on the rear axle is 13,500 pounds. It takes bigger brakes to stop 13,500 pounds than it does to stop 8,500 pounds. ;)

Some food for thought. You might end up dollars ahead buying a F350 they way you want it and upgrading the brakes. There are some killer aftermarket brakes out there that greatly increase brake capacity.

One of the experts on here can probably answer this with certainty. I recall reading calculations and after factoring in the ratios and tire sizes the 450 w/4.30s is nearly identical to a 350 w/4.10s due to the tires heights.

It's because the maximum weight allowed on the front axle is 8,500 pounds, but the maximum weight on the rear axle is about 5,000lbs more.

Ad regards the bigger brakes, I'd agree with another poster who said if you get a great deal on a 350 dually then just get some high quality aftermarket brakes. I'm planning to do that with my SRW Super duty and just wish Ford offered a big brake upgrade kit from the factory. 450 brakes will do the job but will need to overcome certain fitment issues re lug bolts etc. When I have loved ones in the car I want the biggest brakes that will fit behind my 20s as 8,000lbs take a lot of stopping at 75mph.

Fifth wheel wise I'm about to be in the same boat as you. Maybe a couple k more even. I ordered the coach with disc brakes. Cheaper than the extra $10k for a 450. It is not terribly expensive to change out the axels and brakes on a fiver. Especially if you can manage to sell the old ones.

PS: Of course I'm going to eat it when I pay through the nose for those nice captains chairs I want that I could have gotten on the medium duty truck. :no:

Slow down. Saves money. Saves lives. The scenery doesn't go by so fast. Stay a little longer wherever you travel to. Also saves money. Since I started slowing down to conserve fuel money I find myself wondering just why I drove so fast in previous times. I think it was just habit.
