Its time to change my transmission fluid again - After reading on this site for a period of time I would prefer to do it myself - I do not trust the quickie lubes (too many horror stories) but The Ford dealers in my area have differing opinions of what you can useincluding a "universal fluid whatever that is". I know no Mercon 5 - Use Mercon 3. What brands or brand should I use. Should I switch to synthethics - if so who etc - please advise. I plan to use the method of changing fluid that I have read on this site - Thanks for the input

The good thing about changing over to synthetic ATF is that it is much less affected by heat, and will last longer than conventional ATF. There are some very good synthetic ATF's, including AMSOIL, Red Line, Royal Purple, and Mobil 1.

Brand doesn't matter, as long as it meets MERCON requirements and does NOT meet MERCON V requirements.

Almost all brands of MERCON ATF will meet MERCON/DEXRON III or DEXRON III/MERCON requirements. That's fine. Some brands - including AMSOIL Universal - will meet MERCON/DEXRON III as well as MERCON V requirements. That's a no no.

I pay extra and use synthetic Mobil 1 ATF. I get it at Autozone for $4.99 per quart. In fact, I changed mine last weekend using Mobil 1 from Autozone.

As a rule of thumb, if you never see over 205 tranny temp, then you probably don't need synthetic ATF. But if you ever see over 205, then use synthetic.

You do have a good aftermarket tranny temp gauge, right? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/warmsmile.gif

The T-Tech machines along with other brands of fluid exchangers are very relaible you just need to make sure that the proper type of fluid is being introduced back into your trans. If synthetic is your deal then the "quickie lube" is not for you but you are using dino then why not use the "quickie lube" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif $65 bucks and 20 minutes later you are done without so much as getting a hangnail. Brand is simply a matter of opinion similar to choosing Fred Meyer over Safeway or Alberston's so long as your using DexronIII/mercon, 2% milk is just 2% milk no matter what label it has on it right /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

If you watch the Jiffy Lube guys close when they do a fluid exchange and ask them to show you what fluid they use you'll be in good shape. Toyota has it's owm "T" type and then you have your MerconV, DexronIII/Mercon ect just make sure you are getting the right stuff and don't be afraid to use the "quickie lube" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
