Hey guys-

After just getting my trans rebuilt, I wished I wouldn't have to post one like this...

I just got into Bar Harbor, Maine, and today while parking for a day of whale watching, I saw LOTS of oil coming out underneath.

Upon inspection, I found that what I think is the HPOP.

Looking at the fuel filter, it's under it and to the driver's side. There are 2 lines coming out of a new looking silver pice, marked "REMANUFACTURED" and looks new. (Ford replaced the HPOP 5000 miles ago). The lines go one into each head cover. So, I'm assuming this is the HPOP?

Anyway, one of those lines leaks, and only when running. It flows more when running harder.

I can see what looks to be an o ring or the like that's broken and sticking out of the top of the connection to the HPOP (?( itself.

I'm HOPING it's just a gasket for the part, but am wondering what you guys think.

We're supposed to leave here on Sunday. There is a Ford dealer nearby, but they're closed tomorrow for the 4th, so I'll take it in first thing on the 5th (which is my bday...geez).

Any ideas on what / how much this is to repair?

I couldn't even get a wrench in there to try and tighten it due to fuel lines in the way. Is there an easy way to fix this myself? The place doesn't allow repairs, but I'd rather piss them off then spend too much. My problem is I'm only a handy man and don't have much besides basic tools.

You're fast reply is appreciated!!!

Don't know if this will help but perhaps this link will give you a visual on the HPOP lines and the procedure on how to fix.

Dude I just fixed that on my dads truck There are two lines from the IPR...(i think that is what it is called) Each one runs to each head. They should be 3/4"... All you have to get is O rings. Each end has a different size. Just take the intercooler tubes off then all the misc plugs off then take off the lines. It takes forever, you need a short 3/4" end wrench. Take the lines off that run into the IPR then remove the ones that go to the head. then go to an auto parts store and match the O rings. I spent 1.64 for two sets of O'rings for that.
Good luck,
Steven

TSB 04-04-04. The pink o-rings that seal the high pressure oil line fittings to the high pressure oil pump blow out because of a loose fitting. It requires a quick disconnect tool (not necessary in an emergency) and a 19mm wrench or socket if you get the quick disconnects off. One o-ring on each fitting, one o-ring on the plug on the back of the pump above the IPR. I believe TSB 04-04-04 pays .8 or .9, thats tenth of an hour, total, for diagnosis and repair, but thats under warranty. I woulnd't expect to pay more than $25 in parts and $100 in labor.

If you had it repaired at a Ford dealer than it comes with a 12 month warranty with it, and it is honored at any Ford dealer in the USA. I would top off with oil and get it to Ford first thing. This is a simple fix, but why should you mess with it. I might even call the repair dealer before taking it in to the local shop and tell them what has happened and where you will be taking it. Good luck, nothing worse that vehicle trouble while on vacation.

Yea, I'll try to call them tomorrow.

I did notice that it's a 3/4" fitting, but there was just no room to mess with it. Plus, the campground doesn't want people working on cars in the park.

So, is that the HPOP then? or IPR? Just so I can tell them and point it out.

TTHHAANNKKSS for the quick replies. I was truly hoping that's all it is.

I hope they fix it for you for free, they should since they just put one in. (Really I wonder how it went bad,, they SELDOM do go bad) And yes, it is just a seal for the HPOP.... good luck let us know whats up with it ok? (Also should NOT be a real expensive fix if you have them do it, what, maybe an hour?) My guess anyway.

To tight and to loose will do it.
There is a tork spec for the fitting.
Fitting has a spring behined it.
25ftlbs with Loctite.
#6 o-rings

Thanks guys!

It's good to know that it should be pretty minor. I'm going to take it in tomorrow morning to see if they can get it in right away.

I'll post again when I know. Thanks!

Those two lines run directly over to each valve cover and there are two of them. Are you sure that isn't the IPR. You do not need any quick disconnect tool. You might just have to tighten it up just to get it moved.... my dads had worked it way loose and was hand tight...plus you could see the pink 0'ring all chewed up.

I am 90% sure it should cost you no more than 2 dollars to fix. You just have to get a short 3/4" end wrench. Just go buy one or cut one of yours down with a saw. Then remove all those plugs in that general area and the intercooler tube on the drivers side. If you take the line out you can pull the passenger side intercooler tube out of the way. Then move the AC lines up and out of your way on the passenger side... It is a pain..the hardest part is getting that line threaded back into the housing... That was hard.
good luck,
Steven

If he can see the O ring squeezing out of where the leak is, something ain't right and tightening isn't going to fix it. You probably had a diesel tech do it, like the one at our local dealer. I wouldn't want him to look at my truck let alone work on it!!! Now the trans guy is pretty sharp!!

Well, Ford is unsure if they'll be able to get to this by tomorrow.

So, does anyone have a picture of what needs to be removed, and how?

I have a standard toolbox, and a NAPA nearby. Or, of course I can try Ford for the Oring kit.

Any help is appreciated. My problem is I'm still low on the learning curve, so I don't know what many of these parts are.

THANKS! I hope they can swing it for me, but if not, hopefully I can do it myself here.

UPDATED EDIT : The Ford dealer here just called, and they squeezed me in, and I'm good to go. I'm just waiting to see if the original dealer will cover it, though it sounded like they will.

The dealer said the O ring looked cut, so it may have been bad from before the install. but regardless, THANKS GOD I'm set and we're good. We're leaving Maine on Sunday for New Hampshire for another 5 nights. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

THANKS SO MUCH for all your timely replies and help on this. This forum is a GREAT place, with even better members.

It is true, the dealer is only as good as each mechanic and their skills can vary greatly!!

To the OP, glad you got it going and all is well and you can enjoy the rest of your vacation. God is good!!
I leave sunday for a 9 day trip to Chesapeake Bay, I hope I don't have to post in this forum!!

JEEEEEEZ.

Well, the truck is fixed. We just pulled into our campground in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and I see that one of the outer bearings on my camper went, took the hub with it, and possibly the axle. Luckily, we got here. The castellated nut is stuck too, so I can't even see if the axle is ok. Luckily the campground had a guy who comes out to repair campers.

What next?!
