Had my 2 year old son in the car seat, ready to go to swim lessons, when I thought I'd take care of the annoying belt squeak. Few weeks ago someone here said that they used a crayon to fix their squeak, so, having crayons laying all over the living room floor, I grabbed a black one. Popped the hood, started coloring the belt, then snap. Once again I lucked out, nothing got caught by the broken belt. Same thing happened last time I tried using belt dressing. Snap!
I'm wondering if maybe the vaccum pump is worn out and turning over to hard. I will look for wear signs and post back.

Hey Jason,

Let us know what you find. I just had my belt break on Friday and it left me 2 miles from home. I was just driving along and all of a sudden the steering was real stiff and then when I went to use the brakes, they were gone too. Scary. Managed to limp home, letting the engine cool down every 30 seconds. :)

I changed the belt but now my shift points are all early on the E4OD. It's in OD and locked by 25 MPH. Not sure why. The belt broke and wrapped around the crank pulley but didn't look like it did any damage. Is there a sensor around the crankshaft? The speedo and tach all work fine.

Your thoughts?

Cheers

Paul

Just finished putting the new belt on. Can never seem to remember that you have to fish it around the fan first, so took me an extra 15 min to figure it all out again.
Nothing looked out of the ordinary. All pulleys turned freely, except of course the crank and vaccum. Vaccum didn't seem awful hard to turn over by hand, still feels like trying to crank over a small motorcycle by hand. Started the truck up and everything looked good.
I did notice that there were lots of cracks in the ribs of the broken belt. I don't think that belt could be older than 2 years. I'll have to find my old post of the last time I came here crying about a broken belt to make sure.
Looks like changing the belt will start to be a yearly thing. At least NO MORE SQUEAK for now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/phoney.gif

The broken belt wrapped around the crank pulley also and I had a heck of a time getting it pryed out of there. I don't think there are any sensors there to worry about. Did the broken belt maybe kink one of the tranny cooler lines? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

We have nothing on or near the crank that would change the shift points. The only thing that can change that is the tps on the drivers side of the injection pump. It sounds like maybe it needs more voltage to make the shifts firmer. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

u were lucky, mine went 2 weeks ago (had one sitting in the shop, knew I needed to change) wrapped around the crank and tore out the trans lines, had to get it towed (dually donot fit on flat bed tow trucks very well. Ended up changing the tensioner and pully. Aftermarket pully's are flat, FORD are convexed, ford sevice told me not to use the aftermarket?
