My buddy has an 05 DRW 3500 with 73000 miles. today while driving on the highway he said his engine just cut out and when he would go to start it would turn but not kick over. So he had it towed all the way home and tried starting it and it fired right up. Anyone have any ideas?

Oh boy, gotta love intermittent problems. That sort of thing can be an almost unlimited amount of things. The first thing I'd check is the crank sensor. Look under the front of the truck and see if perhaps the serpentine belt frayed and whacked the sensor, physically damaging it. Next thing is to carefully check all electrical connectors to see if something has simply come loose. Third is to pull the codes from the computer. I think you do that by turning the ignition key from off to run 3 times, leaving it in the run position the 3rd time. I'm not 100% sure on that, so you might have to check a dodge forum if that doesn't work.

That ignition code pull works.Done it on a 01 I was going to buy and on the 04.5 we did buy.

As for the problem I have no idea still learning dodge cummins here.

I would guess lift pump is going bad, or injection pump.

I would agree if the truck was a 98.5-2002 with the VP-44, but since it's an '05, the CP3 injection pump is less prone to failure. Also in '05 they went to an "in-tank" lift pump which is also "less" prone to failure (the are not fool proof but seem to be better than the filter mounted one)

I would guess cam\crank sensor, my '05 will miss about once every 2 months and usually throws a 606 and 336 code. Mine never completely dies it's just a studder that's caused by my TST powermaxCR box. The truck will run with one of those sensors unplugged but is dead without the other, but I can't remember which it is.

My 04 CTD work truck has left me on the side of the highway twice because of lift pumps. It now has the in-tank and about at the mileage where the others failed so we will see if it's better.

It's still under warranty, take it to the dealer.
