I have an exhaust leak somewhere in the back of my engine. There's soot on the firewall and during re-gen I have smoke coming from under my hood and wheel wells. Having the EGR value cleaned or replaced. Then the repair shop tells me that the only way to repair the exhaust leak is to remove my cab, ***?? Is this true?? They want to charge me between $1500 and $1800 just to remove cab and put it back on, ouch!! It's a 2008 6.4 turbo any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Removing the cab or performing a "partial cab lift" is the preferred way to access many engine components. It is "possible" to make any repair on a 6.4L truck with the cab on but this presents many challenges and the lack of space greatly increases the difficulty. An exhaust leak like yours is most likely (and commonly) one of the turbocharger inlet pipes leaking from a crack at the expansion joints. These engines also like to snap exhaust manifold bolts. A lot of techs opt for the partial cab lift and access the exhaust pipes through the wheel wells. This will reduce the labor involved. I have also removed the transmission to access the rear of the engine... also much less labor. Since I am in New Jersey and everything on most trucks likes to rust and seize. I often require room to use a torch to heat fasteners to remove them and on occasion, cut them off.

Where is the leak, were you told?

Their not sure until they lift the cab. Thank you for the info, it really helps. I was worried that it might be a scam or money grab of some sort. Plus this info will help when talking to the tech later today. Thanks again you put my mind at ease( until I have to pay the bill). Plus I forgot to mention that it also makes a whistling noise as well, does that help narrow it down?

Whistling is the common word used to describe the sound this exhaust leak makes. I forgot to add another old/common problem was an exhaust leak at the turbocharger outlet to down pipe. On occasion I run into one with a slightly loose clamp. Recommended repair is a new metal gasket and reassemble - replace the clamp is it has any issues. I am sure your leak will be found.

To bad I didn't see this earlier ,one of my bolts broke from my manifold went to a muffler shop $350 a shop wanted $1800 to fix the problem cuz can removal ,muffler shop fixed it with out having to move the cab..
