The truck I am looking at does not have this option. The question I have - do the 6.4's warm up any differently than the other diesel trucks or was this option just for added comfort???

I want to say that that the 6.4 is a little slower to warm up than the 6.0.

As with all diesel engines the ambient temp makes a difference on warm up time.

If it is 15F - 20F it can take about 5 miles of driving for the temp to reach "normal" and what I mean is where the needle will stop.

I have the suplemental heater in mine and I really liked it. I noticed my truck would take about 7 - 8 miles this winter to get into the normal temp range. The supplemental heater starts to warm the cab within a minute or two.

I’m with Inki!

I would say that the current (load) of the supplemental heater would cause my 6.4 diesel engine to heat up faster in theory, but I would think this would be minimal. It is my understanding that the heater is a resistive element mounted in the cab heater duct, which I would say is more of an “added comfort”. I will say that since I live in the northern climate, It works very well, I don’t have to wait till the diesel engine warms up for the windows to defrost and the cab to warm up, it takes minutes. When my coworkers and I go to parking lot after work to head home, only the Superduty owners with the heater don’t have to scrape and wait, even the gas engines folks are left behind. My truck engine takes up to 10 miles in -20 Celsius temperature, to get close to its normal operating temperature. Just my 2 cents.

FWIW - even after being plugged-in for several hours, I don't believe our 6.4L puts out as much heat after starting as our old 7.3L did after being plugged-in & right after starting. However, those new seat warmers get hot pretty darn fast!

davydee: Your right, I wish you could adjust the temperature of the seats, they get too hot!! Before next winter, I'm going to try to find a way to control the temperature on the seat heaters and also maybe turn them on with the remote FOB.

I don't have the supplemental heater on mine here in ND. It sits in my garage most nights which stays right around freezing sometimes colder and temps outside were -20 for awhile when I first got it. With the Winter Front on I doesn't seem to bad to warm up although the heated seats sure help.
