Mines starting to sputter. From what I gather it is time to replace the cam position sensor. 190,000 miles and my first sensor? Not bad I say. Who has done this and does anyone have any pointers, shortcuts, or advice on this swap?

I don't even know where it is. I was assuming on the front of the block. Help is always appreciated from anyone. I thank you in advance for this.

Front of the motor, passengers side, ten O'clock position from the crankshaft...The timing indicator bracket forks onto it and acts as a retainer with a 10mm bolt holding the marker on the block.

I found the easiest access was from UNDER the truck where you can slip your hands in and through the belts and hoses to get to it.

Disconnect the connector plug.
Remove the 10mm bolt that holds the timing marker with a socket.
Remove the timing marker.
Pay close attention to which way the connector is facing.
Pull out the sensor (straight out)...You may need a long handled screw driver to help it along.

If there is a shim on the new sensor I am told that you should not replace it...Just the sensor and timing marker.

Dab a little oil on the O-ring of the new sensor and pop it in. Sensor I replaced this week came with a new timing marker.

In addition to those tips, always use a GOOD quality 6-point 10mm socket to remove the bolt. The bolt can be frustratingly tight and has been known to round off with the use of 12-point versions. There have been folks that have had sockets shatter as well. Cheers!

I went to Sears and bought a 3/8 six point 10mm impact socket, to be certain it wouldn't break, and a 3/8 breaker bar. I sprayed Kroil Oil on the bolt for 2 days before I tried to loosen it and, based on comments made on this Site, bore down and pulled on the wrench. It loosened easily. I think the Kroil did the trick. The bolt looked like it was sealed in at the factory but the Kroil looked to have eaten away the sealant and it came out easily.

should loc tite be used on the bolt with reassembly??

I certainly wouldn't, cause you are going to have to take it out again someday. Rather than loc tight I would use anti-sieze.

Anti-sieze -or- a little RTV smeared on the threads will do the same thing...It's up to you...When I changed mine there was nothing on it. I just made sure the bolt was good and tight. The bolt has nothing to do with the operation of the CPS...It just holds the retainer clip which in turn gives you a reference to know the CPS is not 180 degrees out. The sensor plug basically faces down.

Thanks guys. I can always count on folks here on this web site! I have gotten a lot of great info here.

I finally got my tuner back from Superchips. It has been reprogrammed and updated. Man my truck runs so much better now! Mileage is back up and power is there again. I wish I had the money for a downpipe and propane now! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
