My truck has 86,000 miles on it and the water pump has play in it when you reach down and grab it. But I haven't lost any water and the temps are all good. I'm sure it's on the way out because of the miles, I guess that I just need it confermed and also need to know if I should do it now or wait till it's gone? I'm not planning any trips soon and I only drive about 10 miles a day with it. But it is finacially possible now, so should I do it or not?

If it's cheaper than putting a radiator in when it does let go, I think I'd replace it!

I would put a coolant filter on at the same time, unless you like changing water pumps??

Two good reasons to do it now

And the best part

When you say you have play, where do you feel the play? The first thing that came to mind is what fulltimer50 said re the fan clutch. Normally when you have that much play that you can feel it there would already be leakage past the seals. If you have access to a dial indicator mount it to the engine block with the feeler on the pulley and see if it is the pulley (water pump bearings) or the fan clutch.

I haven't really paid attention to where the play is, but the pump doesn't leak. I thought that it was strange that the pump wasn't leaking I guess that I'll go out and see if it's the clutch or the pump. By the way thanks for all the input everyone /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Been down this road a couple months ago

First the serpentine belt went, cuz it was rubbing on the side of the water pump pulley....
I changed out the belt and the tensioner....

Then a couple of days later, the pump started leaking, just when I was ready to go on a trip....
So I removed the pressure cap, and completed my trip OK....

My advice would be this: /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Loosen the belt tensioner, so you can jiggle the water pump pulley to see how bad it is....Especially if you notice that the belt is running to the front of the water pump pulley...

The other thing you could listen for is the scrapping noise the water pump impellers make when the engine is idling...as the pulley drops to the front, it causes the impeller to run out of true, scrapping the housing....making a god awful noise...from in front of the radiator..[grill]....

You probably should change out the belt, the tensioner, the water pump, and the upper radiator hose /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/depressed.gif

Do it at your leisure /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/vomit.gif
