Hello, my truck was running fine until it would'nt start. I turn the key and you can hear just a click, not sure where it is coming from. I replaced the relay on the passenger fender, replaced ignition switch, and took starter to fruitcakes at autozone. The guy tested it twice and told me it was bad, then said he had it connected wrong and tried it twice again, and said it passed. So i'm not sure if the starter is eliminated yet. Batteries test good. What else should I check? How do I check the two relays by the idm?

You may have already done this, But if you haven't, check & clean ALL of the connections ,Batteries, Realay, starter solonoid ect..Who tested the batteries?. hopefully not the same guy that tested the starter....

If you can use a helper to pinpoint the click that would probably be the quickest.

Check all battery connections, starter connections, fender relay for tightness and corrosion free.

You don't list what transmission you have, but could be safety start switch,

the relays by the idm have nothing to do with the starter actually turning over. Also check the 8 gauge wire connection at the underhood fuse box.

When you say the batts test good, was that a "amp load" test or just voltage test?

Thanks for the quick replies. Yes, I cleaned all the connections and did the load test on the batteries. Just waiting for a friend to come help me listen for the click. Is there something that is supposed to be clicking or not clicking? Any other component that would be involved in this situation other than the batteries, starter, ignition switch, and starter relay (on the fender wall)? Like I said, when I went to get the starter checked, the guy made it spin, but could he have bypassed the solenoid somehow? Just trying to decide if I need to get it rechecked.

Just because it spins on the bench doesn't mean it can spin under load...Just a thought...

I just took the starter and the two batteries to get tested again, and they passed. I checked the two grounds going to the engine that I could see. Cleaned all cables to the batteries and the relay. Still no start. I can hear a click coming from the fender relay and also one coming from the starter. I need help.

Is this problem since the spring problem?...

You may want to put a socket on the crank pulley bolt & see if you can turn the motor by hand....

On the starter solinoid there are two threaded studs, there should be a nut then the lead from the solinoid on the fender (the other stud will have the starter lead) then another nut. Remove the first nut and the leads then tighten the nut on both studs real good.

MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST!!!!

I've had to do this twice to mine including cleaning all leads. Also, check the battery terminals, make sure the they aren't bottomed out.

Yes, it did happen after the spring incident. You think the motor is stuck somehow?

I did notice today when I was reinstalling the starter, that the small wire (smaller of the two) that connects to the solinoid on the starter, would not tighten. It would just keep turning. I know the larger wire is connected directly to battery because it has voltage. What is the smaller wire connected to? Should it have voltage when cranking? How would I check the starter myself, while it is on the truck?

If you end up replacing the starter go with the one on ebay from db electrical. You wont regret it. I had a problem with cold morning starts. Starter passed at auto zone but they dont have a way to load test it. For 160 bucks.....I would just do it. Cold starts gone, spins the engine much faster. You will like the sound.

Just change the solenoid on the starter, the two long screws holding it to the starter are locktited on you may use an impact screwdriver or small vicegrips.

I bought the starter at autozone and it has a lifetime warranty. But, they won't replace it if it keeps passing their test. I can't really spend the money for another one right now, so if I did take the solinoid off the starter, where would I get another one and how much are they?

Hello, I got the truck running today. I bought one of the high torque starters from dbelectric on ebay, and it started up like a champ! Thank you to the ones that recommended this starter to me. Talk about some fast spinning. I put my money on the starter being the problem, because I was getting around 13 volts to the starter, which I figured would rule out anything else. Even though I had already replaced the ignition switch and the fender relay. I had the starter checked twice at autozone and both times they said it passed. I even asked the guy if the test they were doing was under load, and he said it was. So, maybe this will be of some help to someone else.
