Whats the best way to tell if my truck was wrecked before I bought it? I have a left front fender that just doesnt line up with the drivers door right and the bumper sticks out farther on the left under the front edge of the fender, as if it was broadsided but not severely. The dealer obvioulsy didnt say anything when I got it (used) but I doubt they would. Should I just go ask them? Is carfax the way and if so how do we do that? I see alot of what seems to be a request for someone to run their VIN on someones carfax on this site....is that possible???
Thanks ya'll,
Robb

uh, go to carfax.com and enter the vin number to get a free generic report and/or pay for a detailed report. Some people pay for a months unlimted carfax's when they are shopping used vehicles and don't want to spend money on individual reports. That is what i did when I was Superduty shopping.

it dont always show up on carfax. You can maybe look at the fenders under the hood to see if you a difference on each side or maybe a tape line. Also maybe look in the jam part when door is open to see if it is different. Also look by cowl and see if it is a little dry looking.

Blue Oval,
Thanks...I dont see many signs of paint issues but the body joint at the fender and drivers door is terrible and all the others are fine so it just look suspicious.

Friend of mine ran carfax and all looked ok. Got the vehicle home, took a good look, and noticed that it obviously had been wrecked and repaired. If carfax shows a problem, believe the report. If it shows no problems, do not believe the report.

Well.....is thre another source then?? Does the dealer have to disclose the info if asked? It appears to be dealer work since the truck was so new... I could be wrong...
Thanks,

You can try Autocheck.com. I got a report on my truck from them & car fax and says everything is ok but they both have different reports on them. The autocheck said had a lien on my truck at one try from another owner but the carfax dont show it had one.

carfax will buy the car/truck back from you if the infomaion is not reported correctly. its a pretty good deal but nothing is fool-proof. If you want to be sure you have to buy new or buy from someone that did and you know them and the truck. Its a gamble.. just stay away from deals that are too good to be true..

Personally i dont trust carfax after reading their line like this -

If you find that any of the following severe problems were reported by a DMV and not included in this report, CAR??? will buy this vehicle back.

So maybe the accident wasnt severe enought, maybe fender benders dont get reported, maybe the DMV In a particular state doesnt keep records of accidents. Big loop hole here.

On edit:

After buying my latest truck in my signature, I noticed things when i put on the first coat of wax. I had masking tape on the driver side hood strut, and the front grill doesnt line up. So maybe the dealer had a run in on the lot and fixed it themselves. How will i ever know about that?
