Hi Everyone

Just got back from a quick trip to Canada and they were doing more extensive pre-security checks when I came back, popping hoods, knocking on door panels, etc.

A cute petite customs agent queried me if the tank in the back was diesel and was intrigued when I told her it was vegetable oil. Explained it was an alternative fuel, heat it 150 and burn it instead of diesel, etc.

Couple of agents jumped up in the back of my truck, thumping the tank, peeking under the truck, etc. They then waved me on to the normal check point, where they diverted me to the special inspection line and sent us inside to wait where the cute agent immediately processed us ahead of a bunch of other people, explaining that it was unusual and they had never seen anything like it and would they see more of it? I explained that yes but most of the implementations were custom and would be different.

She headed out the door with my keys and a bunch guys with instructions to sit down and wait; I offered to give them a briefing on the system, at about the 40 minute mark I transition to “oh [censored] they are taking the truck apart! They must think the hatch on the top of the tank is being used to hide something!”.

At the 45 minute mark a guy brought my keys back and said we were free to go and that they hadn’t done any thing that should affect my truck, it was just unusual for them. I queried him if they had pulled the access plate on the tank and he replied that they had done a density scan.

Of course this is the second time I have gotten a special inspection, last time I had a couple of my summer tires in the back of the truck while the snows where still on and truthly stated that a friend of mine had borrowed them when he had a flat due to bad retreads when visiting me.

So I wonder if I am now labeled an odd ball and will get inspected every time I cross the border?

It's probably good that you told the truth and just tell them it was diesel in the tank. I'm sure that density test would have been much different. Last time I went up I crosses at Sumas and I got more ?'s entering Canada than re-entering the U.S.

I guess next time you'd better bring snacks and some reading material /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I've heard of people using fuel tanks for smuggling, so probably fairly routine to scan anything out of the ordinary. You'd think with an access hatch they would have just had you open it so they could look in. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif
At least you got the truck back in one piece

Well my access hatch has thirty bolts in it so it would have taken some time even with an air wrench.

No, they save that for the SCA ( www.sca.org ) people that cross the border. Once the border agents find out there is a major event and ppl are crossing, they have contests as to who can find the vehicle hauling the "king and queen" and which vehicle has the catapult, etc etc.

Ive crossed with crossbows, swords, knives, etc etc, and when question, we tell them they are educational materials for a weekend display and they let us through.

That, and they are used to see the SCA stickers in the back windows and get bored with us pretty quick.

However, we save the "we are going to war" comments for AFTER we are thru the border crossing.
