I highly doubt that is from CCV vapor since the flow of air and particles is toward the turbo. And beside, the CCV vapors would be on top of the filter, not the bottom...if they some hpw made it up to the filter. That is just a bad filter IMO. Not saying it doesn't filter, just a bad design of the filter and air box. Looks like it catching a lot of debris and possibly due to outside conditions or not enough filter change intervals. I've been wrong before so stand-by for more input...

But if you want to do the CCV mod check out this link:

And taking a second look at your pic... Judging by how dusty the outside of your intake tubing is, I'd guess you live in a dusty enviroment?

Just standard dirt and grime....needs to be checked and changed more often.

Early '99 sucks a lot of garbage up through the fenderwell inlet. Mine would plug up quickly with wet leaves in the fall in wet weather. Home made TYMAR solved that problem for me.

Cleaned it out today

I cleaned out the intake today. Looks much better, put a cheapo filter in until I figure out what I am going to do with upgrading the air in. Turbo looked okay. CCV inlet to the air intake seen for the first time, so I better understand the whole CCV mod idea. Source of the oily under the hood is a leak up on top of the engine. I remember seeing something about it on another thread, will search to find info.

The little sensor in the airbox is probably trash and the filter monitor seem to not work, so I will open up threads about those.

I believe the sensor you are talk about is the AIT (air intake temp). What would make you say its trash? You can get a filter minder gauge from the dealer or you can find some on eBay. To reset them, you push it in on top of the gauge.

To check your filter minder just unscrew it from the housing and apply suction. If the disc moves inward it's good to go. If the AIT were bad I think you would get the "check engine' light..FWIW that is just about the dirtiest filter I have seen in a while.
