US mandated minimum is 40, however some pumps labeled premium diesel have a higher cetane rating as you have observed. you can be sure, labeled or not, that the diesel you are putting in your vehicle is at least 40 cetane. I have found that power, milage, and performance do not always have a positive correlation with increased cetane; however in your area, if you can obtain a higher cetane diesel with little difference in price, then i would definately buy it. btw, fyi, cetane is a rating that is applyed to show the amount of duration between the fuel injection event and the begenning of the actual combustion of the fuel, the higher the cetane the smaller the duration and the quicker the burn. As an interesting note; in a properly timed and good condition diesel engine, much of the combustion noise especially at low load/idle conditions has been found to come from a delayed and random start to the begenning of the combustion event within the cylender. It was found that the lower the cetane the more unpredictable and more random this combustion delay becomes. this is interesting because many believe that the delay from lower cetane is a precise difference in delay over that of higher cetane; however it was found that, as i said, the lower the cetane, the more unpredictable the duration of delay of each injection/combustion event, even within the same cylender.
