First off sorry if this has been covered before /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Some of the stations I refuel at display a mimimum Cetane rating of 40 ,while a couple of others have a sticker stating 59 . Some just say "premium ". While others have no rating at all . I know it's better to buy fuel at the same place . But , I have to travel to diiferent areas in the course of doing my work . So I guess my queston is what Cetane rating is acceptable as a minimum to buy . And at what point is getting a High rating just a waste of money ? Thanks , John

Anyone want to at least make a stab at it ? I Just find it odd that We can get an Octane rating even at a Mom ,and Pop store that sells gas.
But,for the most part don't get any kind of clue as to what We are getting when buying our fuel . John

I understand Your statment . regarding different types of diesel fuel .
But there are many blends of Gasoline as well . they are still rated by Octane . And they are displayed for all to see . I'd just like to see the same done for diesel . I do understand the need to "cut " #2 with kerosene for winter use . But I'd like to see what the actual Cetane rating is between it and "summer" fuel . Maybe this is just a "rant " ,but i'd like to see some sort of standard as far as the fuel I buy .
Labelling the pumps as to Minimum Cetane would help . John

US mandated minimum is 40, however some pumps labeled premium diesel have a higher cetane rating as you have observed. you can be sure, labeled or not, that the diesel you are putting in your vehicle is at least 40 cetane. I have found that power, milage, and performance do not always have a positive correlation with increased cetane; however in your area, if you can obtain a higher cetane diesel with little difference in price, then i would definately buy it. btw, fyi, cetane is a rating that is applyed to show the amount of duration between the fuel injection event and the begenning of the actual combustion of the fuel, the higher the cetane the smaller the duration and the quicker the burn. As an interesting note; in a properly timed and good condition diesel engine, much of the combustion noise especially at low load/idle conditions has been found to come from a delayed and random start to the begenning of the combustion event within the cylender. It was found that the lower the cetane the more unpredictable and more random this combustion delay becomes. this is interesting because many believe that the delay from lower cetane is a precise difference in delay over that of higher cetane; however it was found that, as i said, the lower the cetane, the more unpredictable the duration of delay of each injection/combustion event, even within the same cylender.
