I was following the instructions for changing the trans fluid for a newer Super Duty.I drained the torque conv. and pulled the pan out to clean it.I reinstalled it filled it with 8 qrts. It said to start it with the rear return line off and clear hose into bucket. After 40 seconds running in gear it started to shake and idle real rough. So I shut it off and I put 4 more qrts. in. I started it, put it in reverse and it did the same thing.I topped it off and all is fine now. I was just wondering if I hurt the trans? What made it idle so bad , did the torque conv. lock up?
Thanks Jack

I know this post is old but i'll reply for others searching. Yes as a matter of fact the converter was locking up. The converter needs fluid pressure to unlock so with low oil, or the trans line off, the converter was acting like a stick shift truck with the clutch out. I had this once happen on my old psd van. The filter had dropped down a bit in the pan and when I started it cold in the morning Id put her in reverse and it would stall the motor. after like 20 second it must have sucked up the filter /pickup tube and all was fine for the rest of the day. Sadly I found this out after pulling the trans out and getting it on the bench /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
