Can't speak for that particular engine, but I'd sure play it safe and fill the new filter with CLEAN diesel. Many brands of smaller diesels, tractor, front end loaders, etc, absolutely will not start if they're the least bit air-locked after a filter change. I recall some Case engines even had a hand primer built into the filter head for starting after a filter change or working on the fuel system.

I'm pretty sure this is a BIG tractor, 400+ CID 2-cylinder with the fuel tank mounted right above the engine. Dad had a JD R for a couple months and the Neighbor had a 730-D....they were fairly similar in some respects and I think had filter elements in steel canisters and they did have a primer. Worse comes to worse You can always turn them over with the PONY engine. The 730's had a cute little 60 or so CID V-4. The R only had an opposed twin.

Mine is electric start, got a big 24 volt starter that whirls it right over. I found the book for it, fuel is gravity fed to the filters, theres no primer just a bleed valve.
