I've never done this on a "sealed" rear end.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Can use an impact gun to loosen/remove the bolts or stick to wrenches and sockets? I'm assuming that once I do that, then I should pry the rear cover off and remove the old gasket? What do you guys use for a new gasket?
If I use the Mobil 1 75W140 , should I still bother with the Ford additive?
Thank you for any feedback. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

An impact is OK for removing the cover... for installing it, I will run the bolts to "snug" with a 3/8ths impact and finish by hand. A few semi-gentle raps with a 10 ounce ball-peen on the sides of the cover will help break the seal.... listen for the change in sound... prying under the cover can bend the flange, creating more damage than the hammer will (if used wisely).

The cover is seal at the factory with gray Ford silicon (AKA, silicon of death).... Ford black is adequate if the surface is properly prepped prior to installation. While the bolts are out, inspect each hole to be sure no silicon is packed in the bottoms of the holes.... this can bite you later....

Yes, use the addative... stinks, don't it??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/warmsmile.gif

Stick with the wrench and socket. proper torque value when reinstalling, Axle housing cover bolts: 29-39Ft-lbs.

No gasket, just RTV. Scrap off what you can with a putty knife. Then you a 00 steel wool to get the rest off.

Ford uses a non-corrosive gray RTV. Just about any auto parts store will have something that will work. (Ford spec: ESB-M4G92-A part number: D6AZ-19562-AA)

If you have a limited slip diff, yes you'll need to add the friction modifier.

I used the Permatex Blue Gasket Maker (NAPA, Autozone, etc). 1/8" bead on the diff housing in between and around the bolt holes then install the cover and let set for 1 hour before adding fluid.
