[/ QUOTE ] That is the key, there.

You do not want to mix the green and gold. Sooo make sure you flush it well, it is really not that big of a deal...

I need your help!!!!!!!! Maybe i'm just dumb. I have decided to stick with the green anti-freeze. People at these parts places don't know nothing. Is the green antifreeze just the plain old antifreeze that we have all used for umpteen years with the exception of the additive. I asked them the difference between the coolants for these diesels and all she did was tell me they had some that could go in any make or model. Can someone tell me the difference just so I will know!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks

After watching scads of these threads for along time, I went to DELO ELC red. Even my Ford buddy says the green is on its way out, and the gold still is too much upkeep and hard on th pumps. Now I dont have anything to worry about for about 300,00 miles or so.

Have you ever changed the pump on a 7.3 psd before? It realy isn't that bad, I had to rent a kit from auto zone to remove the fan from the pump though.

Yes you need to do a thorough flush, but you need to do this anytime you change coolants, no matter the type.

I changed my water pump a few days ago. Took me just about 2 hrs. I already had gold antifreeze and it looked good so I did not do a complete flush.

The most difficult part is getting the fan off. I just used a pry bar to hold the fan pully in place and tapped on a large wrech to break the fan nut loose. I also recommend replacing upper and lower hoses, your thermostat, and serpentine belt since you will have all these out anyway. I had no idea when it was last done so it is good to do. Also make sure you scrape the engine block off good with a razor since there will be some debris on there and you want a good seal when installing the new pump.

What is the best way to get the old coolant out of the block? Also the coolant I picked up at NAPA was a purple pre-charged? Anyone know anything about it (fleet charge).

HANDYMAN74,
There are 2 Engine Block Coolant Drain Plugs (Left & Right). To see the location of the Drain Plug on the driver's side it is just aft of your Block Heater (There is a machined flat between the Block Heater and the Drain Plug). Do not remove the plug that is just aft of your Oil Filter and below the other plug.

Did my first PSD H2O pump shortly after gettin our Ex. No big deal...take thy time and replace as many hoses/clamps along the way as you can afford. I flushed the block and did the work using a write up from this site (if I remember it's posted in the 'articles' section).
Cheers,
