Sam, you must really have ticked him off. I believe if you do some research you will find that if the vehicle was originally equipped with a muffler, it is illegal to remove it.

For a replacement, get a Walker Big Truck Muffler (BTM). I think the part number is 41271 but don't quote me. Do a search on this forum. Smokey and others have posted the PN many times. It is a straight through, 4" in and 4" out. A good parts man at your local NAPA can find it for you. Cost should be well under $100.00.

Just find a piece of 8" SS pipe, cut it in half length wise, make some little end caps and wrap it around a section of your 4" pipe, put some pretty welds on it, and that will complete your own "muffler" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Fight it. Texas doesn't require mufflers on a diesel.

[/ QUOTE ]are u possitive? i do know that the cop who gave me the ticket was an idiot.

Well I may be wrong now. Apparently they updated a few laws for diesels in 2004, and I lived in Texas until 2002. Diesels are still exempt from all emissions testing, so that hasn't changed, but they still are required to have the safety inspection, again that hasn't changed. What is listed on the safety inspection is that all inspected vehicles require a muffler. Doesn't specify gas or diesel, just says all. Also it doesn't say what is considered a muffler. Unless someone has more info that I can't find........ /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

I like this option, if it looks like a muffler, it must be a muffler.

Walker (Dynomax) makes a 4" straight-thru muffler. The one you need is #21471, which is 4" inlet and outlet. Some of our sponsors stock the 21470, which is 3.5" inlet and outlet, but that won't work for you. You need the 4" inlet and outlet.

So order it from www.summitracing.com - search for part number wlk-21471

or click here.

That's not exactly "cheap", but it's probably a lot less than you'll find a 4" diesel performance muffler from somewhere else.

42 bucks!!!

[/ QUOTE ]

You must have clicked on the wrong button. It says almost $88 to me, for the one with 4" inlet and outlet. That $42 sounds like about what I paid for the 3.5" jobbie 8 years ago. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

hell yeah thats what im gonna do buy the dynomax and slap it on. u think that will take care of a little flutter???

[/ QUOTE ]

My Walker BigTruckMuffler produced noticeable flutter only if I went way out of my way to hear it. I had to go to the concrete canyons of downtown late at night when no one else was around, then roll down the right-rear window, then cruise at 35 MPH. But since that's not my normal environment, I never heard my flutter except when I on-purpose did that test.

For those who don't know what is flutter, it's like a butterfly flapping his wings near your ear. You feel it more than hear it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/warmsmile.gif

Smokey,
Thanks for posting the correct PN. For some reason I always get dyslexic when I try to recall that one from memory.

21470 for the 3.5" version
21471 for the 4.0" version

I like the exhaust flutter. I think it sounds bad-A. I get a pretty good one doing about 25mph, but you really do have to go out of your way to hear it. Plus with the straight through muffler designs out now, there is really no reason to not be legal. Wouldn't a 5" straight through muffler flow better than a 4" straight pipe anyway?
