I just got my F-450 about a week ago and here is what happened yesterday...

On the way back from a little fishing at the local lake, and headed home after dark and every light except the head lights went OUT running down the highway..!! Well on Sat I remembered on the way to Sonic for some lunch with the family, I stopped and grabbed a few fuses and stuck two in, a 10 and a 25 right where they were burnt and everything started working...whaaalllaaa fixed I though.. OH NO! After setting at Sonic about 10 min with the AC kickin.. I start smelling burning wire and a puff of smoke comes out from under the dash!!!!!!! UH OHHH I thought.. I had the cover off and the top off the fuse box like a NASCAR pit crew!!! After some tracing and realizing the top cab clearance lights are on, along with the dash lights and radio...and the key if off and out??? I started looking at the lights under the flat bed.... let me put this nicely, I would love to punch they guy in the nose that did the wiring or a sad attempt at wiring the flat bed and lights in the headache rack.. There were several places the wire coating was paper thin, and there was a place in the headache rack where the wires were BURNT...not a little hot..they were BURNT about 4"!! Come to find out, there is a couple wires on the back of the fuse box that decied to mate with a few wires nest to them.... All of this from a bad wiring job.. Which can happen on a trailer or a flat bed.. I just wanted to pass the info on and maybe keep someone else from having the same problem.. I may just pull the dash out so I can be 100% sure the rest of the harness is OK... I am just glad I can fix it all myself...I have already put the good insulated trailer wiring on the bed.. I would hate to see the bill if I took it to the Dealer!!

[/ QUOTE ] AMEN,, how many hours would that be,, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif 10-15, 25 hrs labor? CRIPES!!! That bill would hurt!!!
There is no "BOOK" labor rate for that kind of wireing nightmare I am sure,,so you would be at that particular dealers mercy! (Good one would be reasonable maybe,,, one of those that "lurks in the night for victoms" ,, LOOK OUT!!!

Well after an entire day of pulling the dash from an almost new truck.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif I actually found out the only burnt wires are from the fuse box to the light switch... none of the wires up in the main harness were damaged at all.. I checked every wire across the dash and everything is good.

Here are a few pics of the fun, pics 5,6,7 show the burnt wires. Let me just say that pulling that dash was a PAIN, PAIN, PAIN!!!!!! Not real bad, just two screws that you can not get to...one of which is not in place after the reassembly.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif There were a lot of 7mm screws... It took me about 10+ hours...most of which was about 103..

Re: CHECK YOUR WIRING! FIXED!!!

Well after a trip to the dealership and getting a complete fuse block for only $269, and that comes loaded with all relays and fuses. The main circuit board inside the fuse block actually melted a few tracks together and was causing the relay to stay closed.. BUT it is all fixed..took about 30 min to replace it and it runs like a champ..LOL!! I am really excited to have my truck back.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
