While at Wamart, noticed that some diesel oil is only CI4 rated and others CI4-Plus... and even some of the synth. oil is the older CI4 only rated!!!

Below is a cut and paste from a website I found about the new CI4-Plus rating for oil and feel that it should be a MUST for our 6.0L PSD motors due to the EGR's.... my opinon is that using any other oil NOT rated with CI4-Plus is just asking for trouble!!! Even though our manuals may say CI4 use is OK, the rating and motor oil has since developed a new rating that exceeds Ford initial recommendations.....

Mack released its stringent EO-N Premium Plus High Performance Diesel Engine Oil specification in the spring of 2002. However, according to Mack-Volvo powertrain staff engineer Greg Shank, it has since revised the specification due to soot-related oil thickening and shear that occurred after a certain length of highway time.

"The gear drives and the injection systems had changed and that created more shear than the older engines," says Shank. After developing a more stringent shear stability test, Mack issued its revised EO-N Premium Plus 03 specification in April 2003. In order to meet the revised Mack specification, many diesel oils had to be reformulated with a new dispersant system and modifications to the viscosity index modifier to ensure improved shear stability.

"As with previous Mack specifications, the EO-N Premium Plus 03 specification was aimed at identifying oils that provided extended drain capabilities in Mack engines beyond those provided by the current API CI-4 specification," says Gary Parsons, ChevronTexaco Global Lubricants commercial automotive business unit manager, North America.

Most recently, API has issued an upgrade to its CI-4 specification, CI-4 PLUS, and began licensing on September 1. It is expected to provide a higher level of protection for EGR engines through improved oxidation resistance, shear stability, acid neutralization and soot dispersancy. CI-4 PLUS certified diesel oils also meet most of the individual manufacturer-issued specifications and are backward compatible with older diesel oil specifications and engines. CI-4 PLUS oils must first meet the original requirements of CI-4, with the additional requirements of passing the 90-Pass Shear Stability Bench Test and the new Mack T-11 engine test, a more stringent upgrade of the Mack T-8E soot-viscosity test required for CI-4.

Personally, look for CI4-Plus only rated oil (dino or syth).

I am not going to debate what brand of oil to use and open up a can of worms, but it seems that CI4-Plus rated oil is better than CI4 and should be used regardless of brand!!!!!

Thanks,

Jeff

Our 2003 Owner's manuals were printed before the CI-4+ rating was introduced. CI-4 was originally developed for EGR equipped vehicles. CI-4+ was developed to over come some of the short comings of the CI-4 rating. Bottles of CI-4 oil will soon be as easy to find as bottles of CH-4 oil.

Some oil's that were CI-4 rated didn't need to be reformulated to meet CI-4+. Some oils did reformulate. I know that Shell Rotella Synthetic 5w-40 CI-4 & CI-4+ are exactly identical. I know Chevron Delo400 15w-40 did a reformualtion and their new additive pack looks very good and now includes a decent dose of Moly.

Tks. for info. I've also seen mixed CI 4 & CI 4+ at usual outlets. Obviously CI 4+ rating is new standard.

Following FMTs ssheet, oa's don't show API #'s. I quite useing D.15W/40 CI 4, mainly because it would (my oa's) shear down (also other brands) to 10/30 viscosity, less than 3K mi. Currently useing syn.blend which is more stable. I'd switch back to dino. CI 4+ if it really is more ingrade stable. The other upgrades are important, but shearing under 3K, towing/hot temps really grabs my attention. JMO!

How many here have thought...Hey, if I wasn't reading all this stuff on TDS, would I better better off or not? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

Good luck...OT /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Jeezzz!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

And I thought I was doing real good with my old oil! Blackstone keeps telling me to run longer than the 3k so I went up to 4k and they still say I can go longer! They keep telling me I have an engine that is aging better than most they see.

Now I gotta go looking at labels and checking for more stuff!

Makes my head hurt every time I get on here! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

I bought two cases of Rotella at Sam's about a month ago, and I noticed that the jugs now say on the front "something about now formulated for engines with EGR's" or some similar verbage

I don't know about MUST USE or not, but i'm running Rotella 15-40 CI4-+, with no problems. I always thought it was a good idea to start with 1 oil as called for in the vehicle's owner manual and stick to it. CI4-+ works for me. I don't even know how big a differance the synthetic's actually make, if oil is changed 3,000-5,000 miles. Oil changes are cheaper than engines though. I still don't know if it's a MUST USE, but better safe than sorry.
