I installed a new clutch linkage due to the old one worn out. Is there suppose to be any free play in clutch? With the old linkage there was a lot of free play because there was a gap in the old linkage and the clutch cylinder, I coould push the pedal up and down by hand with no effort. Now it is stiff. There isnt any and the only free play you can feel is when I push in clutch and feel the "stiffer bump when I assume the clutch is disengaging but it is stiff, also the clutch engages further up than before. Is that correct? Also I may note that the clutch is not as hard to push down as was before.

There was a little bit of forcing to get the clutch cylinder to go on the linkage. But if I back off the linkage to get the old free play a notch I cannot put the truck in any gear..I assume the linkage is not pushing the clutch cylinder all the way down for disgengaement.

I drove it around and it feels fine, seems to engage properly and there is no slippage....and I can shift gears on the fly.

I know you cant tell me much with out first seeeing what it is doing physically but I know very little about trannys, but I am hoping maybe you can give me some insight here....

It is just diffrent from what I been used to... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

I seem to remeber a similar feeling when I swapped my linkage assembly. It was a "good" feeling though, to have much better feedback from the clutch, and clutch pedal..

There should be no freeplay with a hydraulic clutch. Just like there is no freeplay in your brakes and yes the freeplay you introduced is why you can not shift.

I feel better now/ Its been great/ it has never shifted so easily (on the fly) since I had the truck......

Tim94 shifting without the clutch is called floating the gears. Yes I can float the gears on my rig but I only do that in stop and go traffic. Do not do it unless you know how to do it...The rpms has to match your road speed in order to shift without grinding or shifting too early which can damage the tranny....

I drive big rigs and I float the gears all the time....It is much easier with big rig than our F-series diesels. Again it is knowing how to do it....

Dave,
All there is to it is knowing the operating range (rpms) of the engine. I've been "floating gears" on the big rigs as well. But you are right, it's a much harder task on our little rigs. It's just that I've only heard of shifting on the fly in garbage trucks! Tim

Truckdrivindave, where did you get your new linkage at? My truck clutch is working good but there is quite a bit of travel in the clutch pedal before the clutch disengages. I might go ahead and install new linkage before it goes out. Thanks.

I got in on e-bay/ I cant find it/ Ill keep looking/ It is a clutch lingage self aligning steel spherical bearing that is a permanent repair for the troublesome clutch cylinder arm.

The e-bay address is sheribelle9d16.....He only had a few left and I was able to snag one.. for 40 bucks. It works quite well...Took me about 40 minutes to install
