I have an F-350, DRW, 4X4 that is equipped with a Class 5 Hitch Receiver (2.5 inch). I purchased a 2.5" to 2" adapter and attempted to install it. It slid in about an 1/8 of an inch and stopped. I also tried a 2.5" hitch and it did the same thing. I checked the tube for obstructions but found none. Anyone have this issue or any ideas? Took it to the dealer but they seemed stumped as to how to resolve.

Thanks in advance,

I am not much help but logged on to post the exact same question. Could not find a 2.5" reciever so i bought the conversion tube goes in a little then stops i thought about using a hammer but don't want it jammed so anyone with advice it would be appreciated. Like you i found no obstructions but maybe a small weld ridge inside the tube.

I also had this issue and I went back to the dealer with it... As it turns out the dealer owners son had the same issue, with his new 2011, and forced a 2 inch adapter into the receiver... he then had to use a winch to remove it. It is because the new receiver is made of a tubing that is curved on the inside, in the corners. :ford: sells an adapter that fits for around $50.00... I complained to the management that it was not fair that I should pay more for the :ford: brand adapter than the one available at the towing supply. The owner agreed with me and sold me the adapter for $25.00. The :ford: adapter works very well with my 2 inch ball mount and I have no further issues. I imagine that if I need to use a 2 1/2 inch ball mount, I will simply grind the corners off of the part that fits into the receiver and it will not be an issue as the corners are not a supporting part of the bar.

I hope this has helped...

If the dealer is stumped you might suggest that they put a new hitch on. Perhaps the one you have was fabricated wrong.

Or, you might try another hitch. Perhaps the hitch's steel was not fabricated to standard specifications.

You might want to confirm the industry standard for the inside diameter of the reciever tube and the hitch outside diameter then take a tape to both. If it were a common problem I would hope there would be a fix. Replace the part that is not meeting standard industry specifications.

And, FYI, my hitches do not have square corners. I have a couple. They are somewhat rounded to slide into the receiver. I believe all hitches have rounded corners.

But the new :ford: hitches have a slightly more round tube than the industry standard. Go to a towing supply and you will find out what I already found out. Unless you just don't believe me? The owner of the towing center was the person that told me about the difference and said that he had seen this issue with ALL of the new class five hitches from :ford:. He further stated that he would love to sell me the adapter that he had in stock but that it would not fit my hitch so... it would be senseless to do so. Replacing the new hitch with another new :ford: hitch will NOT fix the problem. The clearance on the inside corners is miniscule in comparison but is just substantial enough to make a difference.

As I said... I have already dealt with this issue. And... I am towing without issues. :icon_rolleyes:

Thanks for the suggestions and validation that it is not just mine. I have sent a pm to Cory at Ford Customer Care and hope we can get some assistance with this. I called my local Ford dealer and inquired about a Ford specific adapter. The parts guy could not find anything. If you could provide a part number, that would be great. I am not happy with the fact that Ford has delivered a product where I have to modify a standard item to make it work. I hope Ford can find a fix.

Thanks again!!

Not sure if it is unique to Ford, but I fixed my adapter in 2 minutes with a hand grinder. I bought a 2 1/2 to 2 inch adapter so my old receivers would work. Clean the paint off the adapter and it fits fine.

Did the same thing when my team mate bought a truck like mine. Seems the paint makes the thing thicker than the inside of the hitch.

I could try to get the :ford: part number for you on monday... Like I said... my dealer sold it to me at a reduced cost to help with the difference. It did help my case that his own son had the same issue, which made him more sympathetic to the cause.

Or if you wish to make the call to them your self...

Call Bob Davidson Ford in Baltimore Md. and they will get the adapter part number for you. (410) 661-6415 [= parts counter tel #] tell them you need the adapter for the 2 1/2 inch to 2 inch :ford: hitch receiver.

I've got 3 adapters, an Acme, a Reese and one I found laying in the road. They all fit fine. Probably the best one is the adapter I found because it has a bit of a flare on the one end that doesn't allow it to go in to the tube too far. And it was free!!

My truck came from Ford with the sleeve and a hitch pin already in it.
My F350 DWR 4x4 also came with the adaptor in it when I picked it up at the dealership about 4 weeks ago.

I knew I would be needing it when I ordered my truck and my dealer had priced one for me at $50.00 in my truck price. However, when I looked at the receiver, there was a reducer already in it. Nice!

I also bought an aftermarket adapter which did not work. Went to the dealer and got it at a reduced cost when I asked why Ford's didn't come with the adapter like the Chevy did!!
As has been stated, the radius on the corners of the adapter is the difference.
Ford part number 5C3Z-19H282-AB is the part you guys are looking for.

This is an old discussion. do a search and you will see lots of post about this last summer when the trucks were new. The radius of the corners is just slightly more than what some third party aftermarket mfg buid their adapters to. Take a grinder to the adapters and have it fixed in less than 2 minutes.

I'm looking forwad to just getting the correct drawbar and throwing away the adapter.

The other problem I had with the aftermarket ones was that the pin hole was slightly off and hard to get the pin through it. Another reason I bought the Ford one. Fits perfectly.

Same problem with mine. Took 3 adapters before I found one that fit smoothly, but when the pin hole is lined up the adapter sits about 1.5" from the end (deeper inside).

My DT 2.5" fit with a little bit of pushing. I just picked up a 2.5" Reese Titan 18K pintle draw bar which needed about 10 minutes of grinding, all the powder coat and a good grind on the corners.

All of this is just not right.

Seems recent trucks are being delivered with the adapter. I wonder if it coincides with the increase from 16K to 17K
