I have been having puking issues and have been reading about sand getting into the oil cooler passages. For that reason a installed a coolant filter from the dieselsite.I was talking to a friend of mine today who has a buddy in colorado that is mechanic at a ford dealership. He talked about an motorcraft coolant additive called fc-9 that dissolves the debris in the coolant system including the oil cooler. I asked him are sure it's not the fw-16? He said that he asked him specially if was the fw-16.The mechanic claimed that it was not and that it was fc-9. Has anybody heard of this? I haven't been able to call the local dealership to confirm. Any knowledge would be welcome.

I believe that he is referring to vc9 which is a cleaner that is used to clean out all rust, scale and sludge buildup. This is used when doing a cooling system flush and came out after all the issues with the 6.0 diesel. There is also an additive referred to as VC8 which maintains the nitrite level in the 6.0 diesel.

FW15 which later evolved to FW16 is an additive that was used in the 7.3 liter powerstroke diesels. Tiny air bubbles would form against the cylinder wall on the coolant side of the cylinder. Due to vibration, the tiny air bubbles would / could eventually bore their way through the cylinder. This would lead to water leakage into the cylinder. Water leakage into the cylinders led to hydrolocking as well as the cylinder needing a sleeve to repair. FW15 / 16 is supposed to eliminate the formation of air bubbles.

I am currently running FC-9 after replacing the oil cooler and EGR cooler to help clean out the crud. I will be conducting another flush and new coolant this next weekend. I am also installing a coolant filter to try to keep the coolant system clear of future impurities. I would recommend you do the same.
