ok 92 f250 228000 miles when you turn the key and wait to start as soon as the light goes out a click can be heard and the alt guage goes from 12ish to 8ish at each click? what is this and is it normal?

Yes it is normal. You are hearing the glow plug controller cycling. This keeps the glow plugs hot for about 2 minutes.

yeap its normal, they take ALOT of current to fire off. no volt gauge in mine, but its fun to watch the dome light or headlights blink at night..
