Is it possible to swap in a Ford OEM digital climate control unit for the 3 dial manual one? I found a used digital unit off an '02 Excursion (mine is a '00) but I thought I had better ask for some advice before I buy it. Thanks.

Anything can be done but I think there is more to it

Don't have my DVD with me but I think you would be missing some input like interior truck temp, Also I think the digital one has a CAN bus feed.

May not be bad to do but I think you will need more than just the head unit.

I've looked into it a bit. Studying schematics and what wiring is there. Like Bruce said, you need the interior temp sensor, and you need the SUN sensor, and the ambient air temp sensor that sits behind the grill.

The SUN sensor is a dual sensor element that literally reads how much sunlight there is. One sensor is used for the climate control, the other sensor is used by the automatic headlamps. to tell if you have it, it is a small black hemisphere on a block of dash colored plastic on one of the defrostor vents. To work with the Climate control, it MUST be the one that is installed from the factory. The ones that come with the dealer installed autolamp kit will not work with the auto climate control.

It is a involved install if you do not know your way around wiring.

The ambient air sensor is the same way. it comes off the harness for the Factory installed foglights. It is not in the dealer kit and cannot be retrofitted to the kit. I only works with the correct harness.

The best way to go is to find one at a boneyard, and pull the harnesses. Ford wants over $150 bucks for the factory installed fog light harness new.

Bruce and HouseDad,

I have a couple more questions about this, since my wife and I would love climate control.

Does the auto climate control actuate the vacuum valves for the vent mixer/selector door and engine cooling water flow valve directly (ie vacuum hoses hook up to it?) or does it talk electronically to a vacuum actuator?

Any ideas what the CAN bus is used for? Possibly steering wheel controls? Coolant Temperature? A/C clutch engagement?

Have my wheels turning. I would love to make my own climate control. Already kicked around the idea for the rear since the mixer door position and temperature settings are just controller through resistances. Our 6 m/o doesn't do a very calm job of letting us know he is warm in the back /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif !

Out of 4 trucks I have (3 F250s and 1 Excursion) the Excursion and the 2005 F250 have Auto Climate control. The other 2 have the manual dials. Honestly, I like the ACC for the steering wheel controls, but really I don't miss it when I am in another truck. I have a 2004 F250 King Ranch with the manual controls (the did not put the ACC in KR trucks and Lariats until 2005) and I also have a wrecked 2003 Excursion that has the ACC. I have thought about this swap several times, since I have all the parts. BUT, I do plan to put this wrecked Excursion back on the road one day, think I would rather keep the ACC in it.
