All,

At work I drive a 2002 F350 doolie 7.3L saddled up with on or about 14,000lbs of tools, toys & parts.

It makes a fine work truck but last week while on the freeway I began loosing power. I was hardly able to make it home on city streets.

We ran it into the shop and they found the fuel system clogged.

It seems FORD sprays a liner inside the tank of our F350 doolies. The Doolie uses the 40gallon tank whilst the F350 SRW & F250 use a 38gallon tank.

Here in California this newfangled ultra low sulfur Diesel seems to have the ability to eat away at the tank's lining and bits & pieces of it clogged my fuel system.

Boss said this is the 4th truck of ours we have had this problem with.

QUESTION-->
Do you suppose the repair shop installed another tank with this same lining ??
Does the 38gallon tank's have this lining ??

Are we all going to have to repace our tanks ??

What is the purpose of this lining ??

puzzled in peoria....

Was the tank steel?

The 38 gal tanks are high density polyethylene, with no coating whatsoever. If you could install one of those, you wouldn't have any worries about a lining coming off. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

I was sweating it because as you can see from my sig, I own an F350 SRW and was afraid the ULSD was eating away at my tank too.

I posted about the same issue a few months ago and everyone told me the dealer was full of it, that these tanks were unlined. Apparently that is not the case. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/vomit.gif

The 2002 must be a chassis cab, that is the only way it could have a 40 gallon tank, and it would be the aft-axle steel tank, which do have delamination problems. If it is a F250/350 Pickup chassis, they have the 38 gallon, which is plastic, and does not carry the problems with delaminating.

Ford has said numerous things that cause the delam problems, from greater than 5% bio, alcohols in the fuel, etc. From my experience in seeing people running different brand fuels and different ranges of bio, I tend to think that it is more of a supplier issue to Ford that is causing the problems.

I would be curious if my 2000 F350 DRW is affected by this? Could placing a fuel filter prior to the pump help save the system?

Kevin, your pickup should be safe from delaminating, your truck should have the 38 gallon plastic midship tank. The delam problems were only in 99-08 F350/450/550 Chassis cab with 40 gallon steel aft-axle tank, and E-Vans(can't remember the years) with 35 gallon steel midship tank.

The only problem with adding a prepump filter if you had the tank with this condition and it starts plugging the filter, you will be constantly replacing the fuel filters because of the lining material and the rust that will follow from the process. I see that Ford released another SSM or TSB recently that has a new tank designed that should withstand higher concentrations of biodiesel.

I would like to know as well. My '03 F550 with 40K is suffering the same problem now. This has to be the 5th or 6th vehicle at work.
