Clunk When Starting or Stopping - 2008 F-250CCSB4x4

I have an 08 F-250 CC SB 4x4 Diesel truck that has since new clunked when starting out from a stop and/or coming to a stop. I have 16k on it now and am getting really tired of dealing with it...
The clunk starting is when I let off the brake and just apply the throttle. It feels like something slips and then clunk.
The clunk when stopping is the same as starting, except when coming to a stop.
This is unloaded or when loaded w/ cargo and/or trailers.
Any help? I know I can go to the dealer, but I don't want to un-spartan my truck for this...
Thanks in advance!

Grease the splines on the drive shaft.
I'll give it a try. Is this something that has to be done every so often, or did they just forget to do this to mine at the factory?
If you have the Camper package or heavy weight suspension there is an extra leaf that will hit a bump stop and make a clunk. Might be that.
Check the Brakes

I have had 3 F-350's and 1 f-250 all of mine have or had drum brakes in the rear. And all have had the brake mounting plate bolts come loose and cause a similar sound to what you have described. I have never had this problem until at least 100,000 miles, so it might not be the same problem. For some reason the passenger side is always loose. I have never had the driver side loose (?). I realize that your truck has disc brakes, but there should me some large bolts that fix the brakes to the rear axle. On the drum setup there are 4 blots and you have to remove the drum to get access to them. You might want to check these bolts.

Also you gear set might be bad, do you hear any whining noise?
Mine does the same thing. Every light when I hit the throttle, clunk. It isn't that bad though, and I choose to ignore it. My 03 had the same problem. The one that drives my crazy however, is the slop I feel in the steering after hitting potholes or bumps in the road.
is it stock ...if not check all u bolts for rocking:nono::thumbsup:
yes, stock. sounds like the slip yolk from what I have read... I'll try a few things and report back.

I thought this was standard equipment? Mine have always done this. No big deal.
Funny. I've had three, and never experienced this.
Every single '08 that I test drove (about 8-10 of 'em) before I bought mine did this, included the one I finally bought.
I'm hearing everything from gearlash, to some load dampening craziness in the drivetrain. I'm still at a loss over it.
My 2008 F450 did this too. There is a fix. It is the torque converter locking up. There is a TSB on this.
It's the slip yolk. This has been a problem with our 2001 F250. The dealer lubed it for free up until this month. We droped the driveline and lubed it ourselves. 30 minutes of your time and $5.00 in lucas grease.

I guess it's a frequent problem with ford.
My 08 F250 does it too. My old '99 Chevy Suburban did it also. Greasing the spline shaft was the fix for the Suburban.
my experience

My 09 does the same thing. Its kinda annoying. I had a similar issue with a 99 suburban and it was related to the yoke on the drive shaft. Lubricating it only helps for a short period of time. I believe the longer leaf springs exascerbate it a bit, because the diff is rotating forward and backward a bit.

I was considering Super Springs to offset some squating and thought they might help with this clunk as well.

Would be interesting to hear if anyone with Super Springs has any experience with this.

It's definately the driveshaft causing the clunk. Just got from underneath my 08 and got it all lubed up. Nice and quiet now. Wonder why they don't put a greese fitting there like my old 96 Chevy 1500 had. Put the gun on it and greese it and you're good to go!!

Where'd you lube? I hope to do this, solve my little clunk. I think it started after i put a 3.5" lift on truck. Wonder if I should take another go of tightening the U bolts.

Undo the bolts that hold the drive shaft to the rearend. Clip off the metals bands that hold the rubber cover on at the section where the 2 piece drive shaft come together. Pull the shaft apart. Lube up the splines on the male part of the shaft that is still on the truck. I also lubed up the female part of the shaft that was pulled aprt. I used a marine grade lube. There is a special lube that Ford makes but, if I remember correctly, it's kind of pricey.
