I seem to have some air in my hydraulic clutch on my 87 f250. My chilton's manual says that the clutch system is sealed at the factory and cannot be bled, it says you have to replace the master and slave as a unit. I felt around and cant find a bleeder screw. The problem is that autozone and discount only seem to sell seperate slave and masters, Are these going to work for me, or do I need to find a sealed pair like I seem to have now?

Do you have the 4 speed or ZF 5.....

I'm pretty sure that Chiltons manual is in error. The bleeder screw is a small allen head located directly above and forward of where the hydraulic hose connects.

I have the 5 speed. An allen head bleeder screw? I'm only familiar with the type that have a nipple like on brakes. The reason I'm having trouble is that you cant see the damn thing, I'm just feeling around up there. If I do find that allen head, what is the procedure for bleeding after that? I'm used to being able to suck the air out with a vacume pump, but without a nipple...

If I recall correctly the small allen wrench slides in at the top front corner, on the side facing the drivers side. The 1st one I bled took over a quart of fluid. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Now I know to raise the front of the truck and to push the plunger in the rest of the way at the end of the bleed cycle, it is that last little bit that gets the air out for me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

The reservoir runs dry faster than you would think it would.

It the master moves while you are working on it then you have another common problem, but don't worry unless it moves.

I have a helper push and hold the clutch pedal down while I open the bleeder and watch the plunger retract, when it stops going in I push the plunger in the rest of the way and closer the bleeder.
I have them pump the pedal twice, then hold, while I bleed the system again until the air is out.

For my truck it is pushing the plunger in that last little bit, that gets the air out.
