I’m looking to get a code reader.. know just enough to get myself in trouble so I thought I had better ask. I don’t have it chipped (yet) and so want to know if that will mess it up. Are some better than other and if you just wanted to pull codes rather than re-program the chip are their other options? Any suggestions or warning would be appreciated.

Thanks
Dave

If you want more power and a code reader, check out the Programmers (Predator, Edge Evolution, SuperChips Micro Tuner (SCMT)). I know chips are usually a lot more customized (my '96 Cobra is chipped) but the programmers are a lot easier to install and move from one vehicle to another if need be. Just my $.02

Cant make any changes, but the AutoEnginuity ( www.autoenginuity.com ) is one of the more popular code readers on this site.

Its also used by International (the guys that build our engines), so if they think its good enough for the factory, it should be great for us at home!

Its a little more than a scmt 1705, and you dont get any HP increase with it, but it will tell you EVERYTHING, LOG it to an XML file, and you can review it later. Or watch in realtime.

It will read stuff that most generic OBD-II scanners choke on.

I've been looking at the archives, trying to decide the same thing myself. The Ease and Autogenuity are appealing to me since I don't have a laptop and they work with a PDA. PDAs are pretty cheap now so I think I can do the scanner/software plus PDA for under $450. Dennis at ITP(sponsor) sells the Autogenuity. That is probably the one I am going with.

Yep. Call the Menace and get the AutoEnginuity setup. It's got a lot of nice features like being able to select a bunch of sensors and look at them in guage format, like looking at a tach or pressure guage.

On of the nicest features is the ability to data log these sensors. You choose the sensors and bring them up on the screen, then you select "record" and it just starts logging the data from each sensor, about once a second. You could conceivably record hours of driving for review later, but I limited mine to some WOT tests of about 20 seconds or so.

Once you save the data, just open up Excel and graph it like THIS IDLE PRESSURE GRAPH, or THIS HPOP PRESSURE GRAPH on "Tow Mode" showing marginal pressure, or THIS ONE showing my pressure dropping way too much while the duty cyle of the IPR going too high. I've also thrown Mass Fuel Demanded into them because I thought it was interesting that the MFD didn't drop much while shifting the 6-speed on "Two" but it dropped like a rock shifting on "Perf." I think it's related to the extra touchy throttle response on "Perf."

Just my 2 cents. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif
