New truck (to Me)! Trying to get it tweeked up. Been studying threads here all weekend (maybe too much). IP pump doesn't look original, and is set a solid 1/8" clockwise from the original mark. Truck starts and runs fine, but some black smoke at light acceleration unloaded at Denver altitude, heavy smoke loaded (EGT @ 1100-1150). Thought I might retard slightly and turn down the pump a bit. Thought I might also buy the dynamic tool and set it right, but Chiltons lists different settings for ranges of cetane levels in the fuel. Do I need to have that checked too! Also gonna replace leaky return lines & caps, will this affect my smoke issue at all? Thanx!

Do your caps "o" rings and return lines first. Dynamic timing requires a special tool that I don't think is made anymore. Some here have used an adapter that changes the line "pulse" into an electrical impulse so that you can use a regular timing light. Update your Sig. so that we all will know what your working with..that way you won't get wrong information.

Here is a link to a thread about tuning an IDI and it includes a link to the tool touse a regular timing light.

Agree with taking care of leaking return lines first but no that's not going to do anything for smoke. We have found that advancing the IP 2-4* past manufactures specs helps them run better. In your case with the elevation you live at you might try turning the fuel down a little but you should seriously look into turbocharging.
