I'm tired of wearing out $1,000 tires (set of 4) in Spring, Summer & Fall when I only really need good deep tread during winter months. I'm thinking about picking up a 2nd set of wheels so I can mount 4 new tires and then swap them on the Truck for Nov-March and then swapping back to half worn tires for all the other months.

Any thoughts about this idea?

Thanks in advance.

Wow- having a dedicated set of winter tires. Why hasn't anyone thought of that before?! I got 70K on my last set of Michelins. Just got a new set this week. I doubt they'd be good in the snow, but for the other months they might last longer than a year.

I drive on gravel quite a bit and it eats tires. I can only get 35-40 K out of BFG TA-KO's, and that sucks. Again, 75% of the driving is in months without snow and ice on road so just hate destroying good tires like that in conditions where average tread is acceptable.

Well - it's a great idea. The new Michelins have a 70K tread life warranty - you'd get 50% off every time you went in to get a new set for your summer tires. I think I'd take the winter tires in the bed down to Discount Tire and have them "rotate" them on for you and document the mileage. Otherwise, the mileage you put on the winter tires would be counted against the summer tires even though they are sitting in the shed. That shouldn't cost anything if they're already mounted on other rims - wouldn't be any more labor than the free rotate service they normally do.

I run two sets, always have. Same reason as you mentioned - I want my winters to stay fresh and keep my aluminum rims in better shape from no salt contact. I have been running used Conti take offs for summer months. My truck (XLT) came new with steel chrome covered black rims which I use for winter tires and I bought a set of aluminum XLT take offs (the ones that belong on my truck if the option was ordered). I got them back in when my truck was about a month old for $600 with tires on them that still had about 8/32" on them...it was a good deal. I used to be able to find sets of 4 used Conti's with 8-11/32" on them for $200 a set but they are getting harder to find now for that price. I was laying down 50K a year so used tires saved me a ton of money.
