every bump i go over i hear a creaking sound, its audible over the truck running and the stereo. i had a friend hop on the bumper while i tried to isolate it (was hoping it was the shock, not the case) it is coming from the rear part of the driver's side leaf spring. when i hold that small shackle type piece, while holding the two parts of the leaf spring together, it stops making the noise.
penny for your thoughts? hoping i don't need to change the leaf springs, monetarily speaking

I had the same problem w/my '00 F-250 4x4. Ford has a plastic shim kit for the springs that's supposed to correct the creaking problem. The shims go in between the leaves, front and rear of each side. I do not remember the exact name for the kit, but it should be listed here somewhere.
On a sidenote, the kit did not fix my creaking problem, but most people had success with this fix. Ford wound up changing my spring packs for new ones. This was done while the truck was under warranty.

ON AN UPDATE NOTE:

it is missing the shim on the driver's side, good call sam. the passenger side is also cracked and about to fall off. is the shim kit something you got from ford? did you change it yourself? easy? hopefully

I did a little searching in the archives and found a part number and some info. It is a do it yourself fix according to the guys that did it. As I have said previously, Ford did mine under warranty to no avail. Ford wound up putting a set of the newer upgraded X code springs on my truck. The problem has never come back to this day.

TheDieselStop.Com Forums: Front end sqeeks

"Ford P/N 1C3Z-5B302-AA. About $13 for the set. (back then) My parts dept. guy just happened to know about them. He said they aren't listed anywhere but the TSB. They call them spring isolators."

Hope this fixes you up.
