I have an 05 F350 Crew Cab Lariet with 275/70R18 tires. At 14 000 kms I believe the tires are wearing prematurely. One tire dealer says 1/3 worn out another say 1/2 worn out. There is no irregular wear, I did have them balanced and rotated today. The other dilema is it seems only Continental makes this size tire, does anyone know if there is another manufacturer making them? I am looking for a mud/snow tire for the fall and winter.

In advance thanks for your input!

I had Continentals on my 98 Navigator. They only lasted 22k.
IMHO they are junk.

Interesting to see a post by hamp regarding tires for 05/06, his concerns are much like mine. I really like my truck, no disappointments at all except the tire wear, availablilty of tires and type of tread. I have been told by the tire distributors I deal with there is a lag time from when new tire sizes are introduced for new vehicles and when the other tire manufacturers come out with them for aftermarket.

Go to 65's or 75's instead of 70's and you get more choices. You dont have to put the exact same tire size back on.

I think the Continentals are junk. I have 6k on my '05 with noticable wear. I plan to rotate them every 5k and ditch them about 20k.

I need studded tires for winter and highway tires for summer. After much experimentation (400k miles worth) I found that the best tires for me are Cooper Discoverer ST studded for winter and Michelin LTX AT for summer. Both tires wear very well (although the studs will only last about 2 winters). The Cooper is a little noiser but necessary for me in the winter. On my personal truck I run the Michelins all year; they are a fantastic tire for excellent wear, low noise and nice ride.

A saw the Cooper Discoverer St in the correct size (LT275/75R18) but only in load range C; I hope they come out with a load range E before I need them. Michelin does not appear to make the correct size yet. Goodyear makes a Wrangler AT LT275/65R18; but I have never been impressed with Wranglers; never got more than 20k on a set before they started chunking out.

I guess we will just have to wait for more options.

Anyone else run across any good choices?

At 55 000 kilometres I took my Continental tires off for the winter. I will put them back on next spring as I think I can get a few more kms out of them. I still feel I am not getting the wear mileage out of them that I should, especially compared to Michelins that I have run on some of my other trucks.

I bought a set of BF Gooderich LT285/65R18 All Terrain T/A's and mounted them on a set of Ford steel rims. I put them on the truck on Friday afternoon and had a chance to drive in slippery snow conditions last night. The tires and truck (the truck was only in 2 wheel drive) handled the conditions well, as by seeing the tracks of some other vehicles they were having some challenges staying away from the guard rails.

I am also happy with the looks of them on the truck, they are almost the same size in outside diameter as the Continentals. Only time will tell about the mileage I will get out of them.

My orignal set of tires went 50,000 miles and I had to replace the rear set (I wasnt' rotating them enough and driving between Marylnad and Maine every weekend), the front set went another 40,000 for a total of 90,000. They were the stock tires that came with the FX4 option I beleive Goodrich Comp TA's. I now have new tires Goodrich all terrain T/A KO 305/70/16 and like them don't know how they will wear yet but I have noticed a drop of about 2mpg on my average since putting them on the truck. I'm only getting about 18mpg now.

My 2000 PSD came with General tires. Worse tires I've ever used.
All my miles are highway miles, so I was not too pleased when I had to change them out at 35k miles. I was on a 3 week trip and had to put good highway tires on, so I went with the Pirelli Scorpions truck tire (supposedly 80k mile tires). Those wore out at 64k miles on the odometer (less than 30k miles on the tires). I should've been able to get twice the miles out of them. I rarely carry any kind of load, and pull a small trailer 3 or 4 times a year.
So I traded those in for Michelin LTX M/S tires. Best tires I've ever driven on. I've put 14k miles on them in the last 14 months, and they don't look like they've hardly been driven on. I know we don't have the snow and ice down here, but I was in Iowa last winter and the tires never slipped once on the snow and ice. I've got 16 inch rims on my 2000, and for whatever reason Michelin makes these up to 17 inch and then 20 inch. Don't know if they will come out with an 18 inch or not. But for the money, I don't think you can beat the Michelin LTX. IMHO
Oh, and I am anal about keeping the tires balanced and rotated religously, usually around 4k to 5k miles (more often if I feel like they need it). The lifetime balance offered by Discount tires is well worth the money considering how expensive tires are now.
