i know this has been discussed before but i cant find it. how do you find the Ford specs for the coolant? i have an owners manual but it says must meet Fords spec then a bunch of numbers. any where to find what this specs means? reading other threads have me scared for my coolant.would like to run a extended drain cooolant but dont really care if not. i do have a coolant filter and add supplemant either thru filter or in tank.have seen where extended drain coolants are not for our trucks. why? what do they not like in our engines? why are our engines direrent than a super duty? any help would be nice.

So mark and rodney that still doesnot answer my question. mark your link is mainly for newer PSD and mainting SCA or am i misreading? Rodney your link says NO but YES. so what the crap? can we use an extanded life coolant IF we use SCA or a filter with SCA? or NO NO NO and ONLY low silicate coolant and add SCA or filter with SCA in it? i check SCA 2 or 3 times a year but would like to know the coolant i put in or add is right. thanks Mark and yes you too Rodney /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif but like i said still does not answer my question. yes or no on ELC or even coolant that is for a newer PSD.

I would not use an ELC coolant in a 97 model. While ELC is a marketing term it is generally used to refer to some type of an OAT coolant. There are some coolants that are refered to as long life or extended life that are not OAT coolants. Those would be ok to use. The coolant that comes in the new PSD's is an OAT type coolant.

There are lots of brands of low silicate conventional coolant. Because of the way antifreeze in blended, packaged, and distributed the brands sometime vary with regions. Not all brands are distributed nationwide.

You may have some local brands that I've never heard of. I regularly see brands here in truck shops that I haven't seen before. Some of the best choices would be fully formulated coolant like Prestone HD Antifreeze, Fleetguard ES Complete, Peak Fleet Charge. It this area the Prestone can't be found. Peak and Fleetguard can be found. Peak is less expensive.

There is nothing wrong with just a plain low silicate coolant that you add SCA to. If you learn how to monitor the coolant(and its very easy to learn)it will last a lot longer than some think it will. Regular old green antifreeze can easily maintain a good condition for 100,000 miles.

Deeretrac, I'm close to 130,000 miles with the CAT extended life coolant. I have never had the first minute of problems with the coolant system. The coolant is as clean today as the day I put it in the truck in 1998. I have never had to add the first drop of coolant in almost 7 years.......

ok this is what i was afraid of. some say DONT use X brand others say its OK to use X brand. all coolant i have seen today says it compatible with ANY,ALL coolants for ALL vechiles some are low silicate some are not. i know we need a low silicate coolant but this is getting confusing.
