I've read alot on Wvo and always here people talking about different ways to filter on the road, but why couldnt someone(with truck or trailor) carry a 275gal. totes on their trip? Heck, even if you got 15mph you could make it over 4000 miles

One word:

WEIGHT

IF you had that much fuel, you would cut into your towing/hauling ability very badly.

If your going to use your truck just as a commuter, and wanted that much fuel, you'd be better off getting a smaller diesel that got better fuel mileage.

Well that would be quite literally a ton of oil to haul around LOL! If it was half full you would have a big slosh factor on sudden stops, etc.

Does the 275 gallon tote fit between the wheel wells?

I did a long road trip my self recently and had 150 gallons aboard, I think I got about 20mpg though I didn't monitor the WVO consumption that closely. Here's a link to the thread on my travel pack. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well ALL....

Thats exactly what I use to collect!!! Every several weeks me and a friend go out and get about 250 gallons in a 275 gallon tote tank.

To tell the truth I hardly know that its back there except when I brake or accelerate.

I wouldn't mind a flatter 175 gallon tank for full time. Weight wouldn't matter that much on my little truck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

How well does it fit between the wheel wells and how do you get it out of the truck? Got a picture of it in the truck?

It fits right in-between the wheel wells and we just pick it up, empty of course! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/warmsmile.gif
Use a honda gas pump to fill it up and to empty it.

We leave the house about 8am and are unloaded by 11am. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

well, 275gallons is under 2000 pounds, any 350 and most 250s should be able to handle that without much trouble. Granted, you have the "slosh factor" that isn't present with "dead" weight, but that can't be *that* big of a deal. I don't have a "major" trailer yet, but when I do, I'll install some sort of tanks for hauling WVO on long road trips. This will take the weight-carrying burden from the truck, but add to the towed weight. (big deal /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif) My truck tank will be in the 80-90 nieghborhood, so I imagine another hundred gallons or so should get me just about anywhere I'd want to go and a good part of the way back.

I haven't really given it a thought when I am driving. In fact driving to me is like breathing, I just do it, and good I might add, been breathing now for about 55 years. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Why don't you just list what you think the most important parts of driving should be. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

One way to ease some of the sloshing is to add a bunch of what some call 'wiffle balls' inside the tank. These are hollow balls with holes in the shell. As a result, they don't take up much room and they can create baffles inside the tank. Now, the big question is how many would it take?

I'd look for the largest that will fit in the tote opening... probably 6". Even with 6" it would take close to 300 to fill up the tank. So, maybe this isn't such a great idea. I'm sure there are other ways to insert something to break the wave action.

I did a 4000 mile round trip to Maine and only had to buy half a tank of diesel. I filled up the 60 gallon aux tank (toolbox combo) plus had one drum in the bed. In the trailer (that was dropped off in NC) I had three more drums. I just transferred the veggie from here to there... and it worked great.

I wouldn't bat an eye at toting three drums (165 gallons) in the back of my truck. That's about 1233 pounds. A fourth drum would take it to almost 1650 pounds. Still, not that much for a 3/4 ton truck. It actually rode great with all that weight in the bed. Stopping was not appreciably different. With my 60 gallon tank plus three drums I should get 4000 to 4500 miles not including running an additional 500 miles on the main tank of biodiesel.

Go for it!

4000 miles, and say you averaged 13mpg, thats 307 gallons of fuel. Say you DIDNT have to buy road diesel at 2.25 a gallon. You save almost 700 dollars!! If that doesnt motivate a person to run on Veggie or Bio, nothing will!

Thought I would add my $.02 to the mix. My recovery system will be a 500 gallon propane tank on a converted old mobile home trailer frame rig. Will use the tank in vacuum setup to pull the wvo in with a 1.25 inch reinforced pvc hose, and pull the vacuum with a 120v vac pump recovered off a big HVAC chiller. Run the pump off a 2500 watt inverter from the truck. Should be a killer setup. Maybe I should get the wife to paint sunflowers on the tank...nah don't want to attract any more attention than I have to. Let 'em think it's a sewage tank sucker or something as benign. Else I will soon start competing for oil at my favorite spots.

I guess I COULD use the ugly trailer as a big tank on long trips /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

i didn't think of it that way, what do you notice when stopping or starting? just the slosh? you should be able to put some kind of baffel in the tank, how large is the opening? where in nc are you at? i'm in morehead.

They are a tall 46 inches high.
On the side where the valve is located it is 40 inches wide.
And they are 48 inches deep.

Just went out and measured mine.

There is a place in Winston Salem, NC that I talked the fella into selling me 4 for $50 each. PM me if you would like that info.

Ya'll are right, my truck sure does ride better with a load on her back.

i'm not sure how you could do it but at work we tow a 1000 gal jet roding machine that has a baffle plate or two, kind of over under dividing up the tank to stop the slosh.

I don't drive around much with a 275 gallon tank on the back of my truck with 225 to 250 gallons of WVO in it, only a couple of hours when I collect. Not enought time in the truck to worry about baffels and such.
I do have a 98 gallon tank with baffels in them in the bed for my MAIN tank of WVO. I can go about a thousand miles befor I have to fill'er up.

Figure I may as well chime in my .02 as well /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. I have thought about doing that 275 tote thing as well, and actually found a place in Seattle down in the industrial port area that sell s them for i think $75. My longest road trip to date was exactly 3000 miles in 3 days on a whirlwind road trip to Mexico, Vegas and back with some friends in I think October? Any way, I filled my 70 gallon tank, then brought 4 30 gallon and 2 15 gallon plastic jugs. We stopped about every 800 miles to refill. A little more work, but you can use a quick connect to a hose in the top, that goes to the bottom, or a transfer pump. This allows more flexibility for arrangement, use of bed space, and is modular in that you don't "have" to take up 275 gallons of room if not needed. Plus the sloshing is not a factor. And the 30 gals are easier for a person to move around, or remove if still full. However, the tote would be much easier, to set in the bed, plug it in and go, and not look back. Just some ideas....

Glad to hear this is working out so well for all of you, RoReRi, Todd, Freds, and so on. Great feeling driving by the gas station, looking at that 2.75/gallon, and laughing aint it?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

I live in Ohio, and have two sitting behind my garage. I also have three 2" trash pumps(gas) a few diaphram pumps, barrels, buckets, and four gassers! I need to sell some vehicles to get a decent diesel to convert! I guess I'm still debating on the 78 300sd turbo diesel benz that I know I can get for $800, or try to find maybe a f250 for a good price? Seems more practicle to get a truck since I need one anyway, but the old benzes are suppoesed to be great for wvo!
