My mom has patiently waited (12 weeks) for her 2008 F450 to arrive so she can start her retirement on the road with her new 5'er.

The dealer called this morning to inform her the truck arrived but the fender has been damaged. She wants to reject the truck and order another one but the dealer says they will fix it and will be "good as new".

I have a few questions. Does this happen often to dually's and/or F450's? What are her options with the dealer (she has $500 deposit)? If she orders a new one, will she get higher priority and possibly receive quicker?

Thanks for your help.

IMO let the dealer fix it,if it is not done to her satisfaction refuse to close the deal. There is nothing to say if she orders a new one it won't be damaged also (hopefully not)Good luck.

If the repair work involves paint work, then there is no way I would accept this truck. I would definately reject this truck and request the dealer order another one. If the dealer does not want to order another one, then there is no reason she should not get her $500 deposit back. Its not her fault that the vehicle was damaged.

Damage does happen during transport. It does not matter if it is a F-450 SD or a Focus, it happens. More often that not it usually comes back to the person who operates the transporter just being careless.

As far as priority goes, vehicles damaged during transport are one of those rare occasions that a dealer can request a lower priority number. Although the key here is the dealer has to be the one to make contact with VO and explain the situation and make the resolution. Being the dealer wants to fix it "good as new" and has not offered to order a new truck, I would not expect much help from the dealer in that area.

Let the dealer fix it. They have to fix it to sell to someone else anyway. If she doesn't like the fix, don't buy the truck. Someone could run a grocery cart into it the day after she brings it home. Is she going to sell and buy a new truck when that happens?

Vehicles get damage all the time that is below the disclosure amount and are fixed at the factory or at the railhead and you do not get told. Get them to give a warranty for the fender paint work that is above the factory warranty on paint work that she will have already. If the fender develops a problem and factory rep gets involved and claims no Fomoco coverage due to substandard repairs then she will have recourse back to that dealer to get it made right.
As poster above said, she could drive home and bang a mailbox turning into driveway and she'd not go back and trade for that reason (would she?).

I disagree....... If I'm paying what they're asking for one of these, I'm not taking a repaired truck. When she goes to trade it in, it's still been painted on. They're not gonna say oh, it was done at the dealer before you took delivery, so we won't reduce your trade value.

I have to agree. I unfortunately had to have a year old Mustang GT repaired many yrs ago ('89) and the selling dealer sold the parts, left rear window & left rear fender, new wheel, misc. other parts to the body shop. The paint faded BADLY in a year (bright red), and the fender came complete with the first dent that was still visible AFTER the fender was installed & painted.
The paint systems used by automotive OEMS so far exceeds the durability of anything available in body shops I wouldn't accept a repaired truck especially if it's a "Color", meaning anything but white.

I agree with the Doc /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif....If anyone is going to put the first dent in it, it will be me....When I order a BRAND NEW truck, I expect a brand new truck, not a repaired one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

I saw the picture that the dealer sent her. It was a small scratch on the outside of the wheel well. They are going to repair it then she will go look at it on Saturday. I think they offered her about $400 off for the damage. This will pay for the bedliner. I think they are also going to add something to the sales contract about it so if it does not last, it will be repaired. Thanks for all the responses.

A repair done before the first sale, in factory or at the dealer won't show on any vehicle damage reports, so the resale value will not be affected as long it is a good quality repair job. My new truck had a torn scratched tailgate protector when I went to pick it up, an easy fix but damage does happen in transit.

It sounds like the dealer is taking good care of her. I'd accept the truck as long as it was fixed right. Depending on the scratch, I might leave it there, it may look better than a mis-matched fender paint job. I think I might try for an even $500 though. Some of the other posters have a good point. You could order another one, get a better priority, wait 8 weeks, drive it home, take out a mailbox, and that new dually fender is all messed up again. And you would have had to wait maybe 20 weeks for a truck. 5 months? crazy talk.

I don't care about the who makes the first scratch, me or them, it'll get one sometime anyway. Atleast when they do it, you can get some compensation for it.

Our dually fenders come from a supplier just like you see it. Its painted to match the truck with the side markers already installed.
We install the wirelloms for the lights, then fasten it to the bed. Then put in the fender guards and braces. These are made of a composite material that is pretty duarble, the scratch will be a real easy fix. If it was damaged to much, they would just replaced the fender. No reason to order a new truck and they probably wouldn't anyway. They would just tell what i did to fix it.
Tell your mom to enjoy her truck,i sure take pride in building them.

Correct. All Assembly plants have a paint repair area along with other various repair areas.

rc38, you must have worked on my new '08 because it was obviously put together with pride. Now the pride is all mine. I sure wish there was a way to know what crew/shift/etc worked on mine so I could send a proper thank you. But instead here's a thank you for a job well done.

You may be able to get 400 off for the damages and the bedliner. Never hurts to ask.
