Hey everone.
I just got home from a 3 hour trip with my 05 6.0. I was pulling a 16' enlosed trailer that ways around 6k with all my work stuff in it. It ran fine on the way up but on the way back i was bucking a 40 mph head wind!!! it was fine for about 25 miles and then would barely go over 65. My wife and i kept smelling this wierd smell but when i pulled over eveything looked good under the hood with ne leaks.
When i got home i opened the overflow bottle and the coolant was almost black and that was were the smell was coming from! IS this a oil cooler problem or something else? there is no coolant in the oil at all. I just had the truck in to the ford dealer to replace a broken fuel filter cap that was leaking & they pulled the EGR and showed it to me while i was there-dirty but dry as a bone so they cleaned it up for me and put new O-rings in it. They also pressure tested the coolant system and it 16 PSI for 40+ minutes before he unhooked it. Any help here would be great

Sounds as though your oil cooler just took a dirt nap on you.
Your in for a good flushing on top of the typical replacement cost, and don't do this job without replacing the EGR cooler! It just isn't worth the risk of having that go in a few weeks after replacing the oil cooler.
The oil system operates at a higher pressure, so the oil will go out to the coolant.

hey mounty - Thanks for the advise. I posted on here a couple weeks ago having just finnished my coolant flush, well there goes about $200.00 down the drain. do you think that i should get kit that contains the following:
EGR valve/cooler delete,
Ford oil cooler,
Oil cooler screen,
Turbo bolt / O-ring kit
and Intake gaskets.
Doesnt the intake need to come off in order to do the OIL Cooler anyway?
I want this done right this time and not have to worry about it again.
And also would the oil cooler failure cause a loss of poer like i had?
thanks again for all the advise you give to everyone, i know that when you post a reply your advise should be used at all times!!!!

You don't need to delete the egr valve per se. I have an egr cooler delete and the egr valve stays put. I get a code (insufficient flow detected) on occasion. I didn't get a code for three weeks, and since I mentioned that I have gotten the code twice in 2 days. Typical Murphy watching over me...
I would call Tousley ford for the turbo hardware kit, the new updated oil screen (not the plastic one, new is steel), oil cooler, and the intake gaskets (you might not even need them, they can be re-used).
The EGR delete kit option is up to you, they are rather easy to do once you have the intake off anyway. Yep, the intake comes off, its not all that hard to do.
Number 1 thing to be aware of, CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN before you remove the intake, then CLEAN, CLEAN and CLEAN before you take the oil cooler cover off.
Once that is off and the oil cooler is out, CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN. You want Hospital clean. Especially the area under the oil cooler cover. Get a piece of garbage here and you will be chasing running problems when that hunk of crap gets sucked into the HPOP. If you are not lucky, it might just take out your IPR sensor too. Even a piece of dust can screw you up later.
Post up or send me a PM of your e-mail addy, I have a few PDF files you might want if your going to tackle this yourself.

Edited to add on: I try to give the best advice I can. I am just a beginner, having only had my truck for about 8 months now. I have spent alot of time reading here, and a few of the other Ford truck forums. There are members of this forum that have extensive knowledge about every detail of this engine and Ford trucks as well. Everything I have said here, or previous, has been covered by them, I am just a parrot and regurgitate what I have read.

I think they are blown-- I drove it up to the shop this morning to have them start work on it and blew white smoke all the way up there. I guessed that it was the head gaskets as soon as it started smoking like that. any idea as to how many hours it takes to do them and the oil cooler, egr cooler delete? I but this problem cost me 4,000 at least?

Sorry to hear about your problems dooboz but if it is the head gaskets have them install ARP head studs when they put it back together.
