I was just curious...I bought both my trucks used last year and got no owners manual with either of them...

What is the red switch for on the dummy light panel...Both trucks have them and I have no idea what they are for.

Turn it on and see what happens. I have a 96 and there is no switch, neare the lights. The previous owner may of put one there since it is a good location. Did you buy both trucks from the same person?

Nope,

The 96 F250 CC 4X4 was bought used at Eagle Jeep Buick in Homosassa, Florida and the 92 CC dually longbed was bought at DeQueen Ford Mercury in DeQueen, Arkansas...Both have this red rocker switch on the idiot light panel to the right of the steering wheel...I'll take a pic and post it. It looks factory.

I've got the F-250 2wd and lucked out and got the owners manual with it. I have no switch where you do. The manual shows the 4wd switch in that loactation, but doesn't look like the one in your picture. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Nah I do not think it's associated with the 4x4 either...My 92 F-350 CC dually is 2WD and has that switch too.

The 96 (in the picture) is a 4x4...But it's not the push button on the fly...Got the gear shift on the floor for that.

I'm just guessing but could they be alarm kill buttons?

[/ QUOTE ]

Possible, but there are no alarms on the trucks now...and an alarm kill button right out in plain view?

Yeah mines on the dash, but you have to have the key on before it will kill the alarm.

I would agree... As mentioned above, the best answer is going to come from tracing the wires back.

Let us know how it turns out.

This may sound silly but, I had a 1990 with a similar switch and it was to turn the overdrive off.

Overdrive button on both trucks I have is on the end of the transmission selector.

The trouble I see here is that we are all guessing, and without having the truck in our driveway and checking it out there is no way for us to know what the swithch is for. They could be for some running lights or backup lights, possibly a switch for a switched 10K mod. There is just too many things for it to go to for us to know without as was said above tracing out the wires. Perhaps they are both emergency kill buttons incase you get going too fast????? They are deffenitly not factory.

It is not factory. Like everyone else stated, trace the wires or look for any light accessories. Or there was a camper in the bed for a manual light inside the camper.
