143,000 miles

I purchased the Truck for my wife/family 20,000 miles ago from a used car dealer. Has ran flawless until 3 weeks ago when it would not hot start. It would crank but not start. If I wait 20 min it will start but it cranks a bit first. So I take it to the ford dealership (Here in Hanford Cali) 2 weeks ago and they tell me it has a leak in the high pressure fuel pump. I tell them to go ahead and change it and I tell them while they are at it replace all my injectors and the oil cooler and I give them a new bulletproof EGR to install. $5,600 plus the egr I supplyied. So I pick up the Excursion last week and It still wont hot start. Its like nothing was done. So I drop the truck of again today so they can try again. My question is this: Arnt they supposed to leak the fuel system down after they supposedly fix it??? Any Ideas?

And I know they did work on the engine. I can see the bulletproof EGR installed and I have TORQUE app which shows that my Oil/Water Delta went from 30 degrees before the new oil cooler install to 8 degrees now. I personally drive a 13 ram 3500 SRW and have never used this ford dealership before so I cant judge my prior experience. The service rep just called me and told my he thinks my oil pressure sending unit might be bad??? ***

First, its time to go elsewhere. The prices you're being quoted are absurd. I have no idea what a high pressure fuel pump is. The 6.0 has a fuel pump and a high pressure oil pump. A HPOP is $540, and the fuel pump less. I can buy a set of Ford/Motorcraft reman injectors for $1,600 all day long. The oil cooler kit can be had for $270. You supplied the EGR cooler. So, $3,190 for labor?!!! All told its maybe 11-12 hours for me, and a tech who works on them for a living should be able to do it faster than I could. Even at $150/hr. assuming 12 hours its only $1,800. Plenty of good shops charge between $50-$100 for labor an hour. Now they want $820 to change an $82 sender and a $191 IPR, which is at best 2 hours of labor, assume $150/hr., so $300, total cost $573, and you're taking the shaft again to the tune of $274 on a small repair. Fleet rate? I don't think anyone running a fleet is paying those kinds of prices, or they'd be out of business. Sounds to me like "fleet rate" is code for "slip this guy a Bill Cosby special", and we all know what happens next.

Second, these guys seem like they throw darts at parts. Excessive cranking before a start is typically a sign of a leak somewhere in the HPO system, as is failure to hot start. Without knowing the build date of an '04 its hard to say what could be causing it because the HPO systems are different for early and late build '04s. Early build '04s had a somewhat failure prone HPOP, which they might have already replaced, but its also not uncommon to have a bad reman pump out of the box. If its a late '04 the first thing to look at would be the STC fitting for the HPOP discharge. There are other possible causes as well, but the best way to diagnose this would be reading IPR vs. ICP on a scanner and/or doing an air test of the HPO system. To be blunt, these guys seem clueless, hence throwing darts at parts, which is a jovial way to say spending your money foolishly and without regard.

My advice? Find a better shop. These trucks aren't cheap to own, and can be costly to repair. If I couldn't fix my truck myself I'd gladly pay a bit of a premium for a shop that really knows them. This shop is charging well beyond premium prices and doesn't know these trucks. For me that's a bad combination.

Most dealers don't 'screw up'....They know EXACTLY what they are doing, they just don't know how to diagnose/fix a 6.0l but rest assured they'll stay on it as long as you'll have em.

Sure, why turn down work you don't understand when the customer will pay for your mistakes? Actually there's no hurry to fix it. This guy's got deep pockets. Let's see how deep they go!
