I read an article the other day that said Ford and Navistar have settled their differences and as of Dec of 2009 Navistar will no longer be making engines for Ford for their Super Duties. Has anyone heard what the replacement motor will be ?

yup, the 6.7 liter scorpion. 400+ HP and 700+ lb ft of torque. Ford is designing and building it. I like this move, I like the fact that Ford will be the only company building an in house motor and they should be experienced enough by now because of the 6.0 problems and everything they've had to do with the 6.4. I hope Ford has that ornary male ego where they want the most powerful and efficient motors in their trucks. They already have the best trucks, the Navistar engines aren't as tuneable as the cummins and the Duramax, I hope that changes.
On another note, I wish ford would offer a V8 AND an I6, blow the others out of the water.

ford has actually outsourced the assembly of this engine everything else is built by ford on the motor or their casting facilities anyway the rumor is the caterpillar engine assembly plant is assembling the motor for ford ( REMEMBER ONLY ASSEMBLY NOT BUILDING OR DESIGNING ) i think this is done to help maintain quality controll of engine assembling

I haven't heard those things but I think building the engines in a CAT plant is a good idea

Here is a thought, will the parts only be available from Ford? Presently, many parts can be obtained at IH, and without the additional markup costs. Those Motorcraft boxes are sure pricey!

I can't imagine you would be able to obtain parts for a Ford engine from a different manufacturer until the 6.7 is out long enough for the aftermarket to catch up with it. You can get powerstroke stuff from IH because it's an IH motor and Ford sells them, if ford builds, designs AND sells the motors I wouldn't suspect you could buy parts from someone else.
As far as the engines being built in or by Cat, I'd love to see a link.

Not trying to cast a cloud over the new scorpion motor but if Navister has been building the powerstrokes all these years and there has been bugs to work out, I would think Fords new engine is not going to be bug free neither.

I'm sure there will be some bugs to work out but i feel confident in fords abilities to build a diesel. The 6.0 issues really hurt Ford and i think they feel they could do a better job, all it takes is some quality control, some engineers that know what they are doing and a whole lotta testing.

I know there will be times when BOTH FMC and their customers will wish Ford would have left the Navistar engines in these trucks.

Far as the comment about the Ford diesel being built in a CAT engine plant......WHICH ONE? They have a couple. A tiny V-8 really doesn't fit what CAT does at their Lafayette, IN plant....Those engines are the size of a WHOLE Super-Duty truck!

Ford has built Diesels in the past.

From 2003
PSA Peugeot Citroen and Ford Motor Co. recently introduced two new diesel engines jointly developed for an investment of nearly $1 billion. The development of the 1.6 and 2 L common rail direct injection engines was part of the second phase of a cooperative venture between the two auto-makers. The engines are to be phased into both partners' product lines during the second half of the year. The two companies announced production capacity is to eventually exceed 1.6 million engines a year. These engines are the outgrowth of the companies' collaboration on a 1.4 L engine in 2001. The project required an investment of $410 million.

I hope they are smart enough to build there new motor inline.

Yes and no. while they were built by a division of FoMoCo they were actually first developed and sorted for use in New Holland tractors.

Ford should consider designing a inline six diesel. The 5.9 cummins in dodges are I6's and are know for putting on a million miles. They also get the best fuel economy out of the powerstroke and duramax's. I've never seen a v8 in a semi truck but all inline sixex, why because there a better engine design.

Not exactally better, just a different design.

And there has been many V8's in trucks. 998 Mack, 3208 and 3408 Cat, 8-71, 8-92....they were all fairly common back in their day.

Yes there have been V8 diesels in big trucks. Mack, Cat, and Detroit Diesel.
