Have a 5 quart over stock Hughes Performance pan on my 4L80E box in my 93 Burb. Paid $200 for it at Oregon Performance thru eBay. WHo maks the absolutely biggest capacity pan for the 5R? Doing a fluid swap and filter change (got my Motorcraft filters, both of them, for $25 shipped from eBay also).
Any tricks to changing the toilet paper secondary? How much fluid comes out. I got two quarts of SP JIC for the Extrnal TP swap... is that enough? WIll do a drain and fill soon if I can't find a truly HUGE pan...
Thanks again for your time in replying. I appreciate your help!

Not much fluid comes out at all when you change the external filter. Maybe a few ounces when I did mine. It's incredibly easy. I didn't even need to add any fluid at all, so 2 quarts is more than enough. As far as a deeper pan goes, I can't help there, but I know several make them.

Dutch,

From what I've read here, you're not going to gain much by putting a larger pan on the torqueshift. The stock cooling system they put on the 6.0/torqueshift was one of the things they got right. I think you'd be hard pressed to pay off a larger pan, especially as the TS requires Mercon SP and there is no aftermarket / autoparts brand available.

Do you have an aftermarket trans temp gauge? The stock gauge is a 3 position idot light: off, good, OH [censored]. Before spending the money on a bigger pan, get the gauges to see if you really need it.

BIGGEr is always better. From my C6 460 1 ton of MANY years ago to now, more fluid means the fluids lasts longer. So many folks will come on and say "I want to add durability/mileage/performance and in response a lot of good-hearted folks will talk about how long it will take to repay the parts in cost savings, especially with exhaust and intakes, IF they ever do repay for themselves. I am not looking at a$3-400 pan as an investment in kind, but rather $3-400 spend now to save $4-5K in trans repairs/replacement later. I have beaten up many a trans in my 40+ years, but never broken a trans with a bigger pan and a decent fluid cooler.
As for a gauge...yes I want on, no I don't plan on getting a analog setup, but a digital display reader for multiple sensor points. EGT, Trans, oil temp, fuel pressure, intake temp... I LOVE information and 10 gauges would take up a LOT of room... I hear you on the trans temp gauge on the dash, POS to say it nicely.
Thanks for responses...keep 'em comin'!

I have a 7 quart over stock Mag-Hytec pan from SunCoast on my SunCoast tranny. I do run Dextron/Mercron III in my tranny. Works like a champ. Don't know if I'd try that with a stock tranny though. That is what SunCoast told me to out in my tranny so I did. And that was coming from Joe Webb himself.

Settled on the Mag Hytec, got it for #308 out the ddor, free shipping from www.truckcustomizers.com
Something I noticed as well.... it used to be advertised as 7 qts over stock but have seen recently it now says 8 1/3" qts over stock. Was there a redesign of the 5R110 pan at MH?
Next question, cheapest place online for SP fluid.....30 or so qts of it.....

The Cheapest places I've seen for Mercon SP are K-mansparts.com and dieselfiltersonline.com If you're going to buy 30 quarts, you can get free shipping from the second place, otherwise, the first one listed is the cheapest I've seen.

Free shipping, sounds good to me, especially since Kman can only ship 20 qts at a time....what is the stock amount for a drain and drop again? 22 qts?

Do keep in mind that the tranny needs to get to a certain temp in order for the fluid to start flowing to the cooler and filter - I think I read 165-170 degrees. Below that, you're not taking advantage of the external filter. I had a PML pan on mine, but in the winter I could never get it hot enough to open up - it averaged around 140. I've reverted back to the stock pan to ensure complete flow. Even in the summer, it runs around 180 fully warmed up on a hot day. I'd suggest getting a larger pan if you need to bring the temps down, but make sure you need it first - you could be degrading the existing system if done blindly.
